Archie's soliloquy to Edith

Like most of us, I watched AITF pretty regularly growing up, but I got older and found better use for my Saturday nights.
I never saw this until today, didn't really know how the show ended.
This is an effing heartbreaking scene. And, dammit, Archie looks so young.

Great acting, I remember that episode.....

LWJ 02-15-2022 02:46 PM

I (as a child) simply could not watch this. The negative bile that came out of Archie triggered a very strong reaction from me.

I know this is satire. But, I despise it to this day.

Funny Thing? Most Americans think Archie is a good guy.

Archie is a jerk.

Archie is absolutely a jerk. He's an ignorant prick. That was the show; the tension between cultures in an era of upheaval.
But I thought this was a fine bit of acting against type.

That was the point of the character. The character Lionel was constantly making a fool of him.

^^^I get this. But, as a child, Archie got under my skin. In a super bad way. I must have known some azz that was similar ???

As my kids say, it “triggered “ me.

I hear ya, there were several Dads in my old neighborhood that could have played the part without acting.

I remember watching the show as a kid in the 70's (or more accurately, being forced to watch it while my older siblings and parents watched). Norman Lear intended Archie to be hated. He was meant to simply be a racist, sexist, etc. symbol of what Lear didn't like and hoped to change about America (Lear was very active in liberal politics). It surprised him that a lot of the audience saw Archie as more complex: repugnant in some ways, but also human. Maybe it was the scripting or Carroll O'Connor's acting, but a fair number of people saw him as vulnerable and sympathized with him. Eventually the show tried to embrace that.

Sorry bud but somebody told you wrong.

Archie was meant to be laughed AT. He was the ignorant butt of the joke. Of course it started a trend in TV sitcoms. Now all white men are married to the really smart woman that has to keep their idiot husband under control. The white male is totally incompetent at any task, and can't even change a light bulb without destroying things. And they all have the wacky neighbor.

And that is NOTHING NEW (wasn't a first with All in the Family, and Edith was not considered the smart one). That's been the case for DECADES.

Archie was a man's man, Jacky Gleson was a man's man. Funny as hell, they would make any wimpy woke twirp cry. Pure class, ooops I forget to mention Archie's partner in crime. Fred G. Sanford, if you cant laugh at Fred and Ester fighting, you have no soul, and you are a wimpy woke twit. LOL!:Dhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1645029590.jpg

How do you place someone on "Ignore"?

Blazing Saddles would not be made today. Best movie ever.

rfuerst911sc 02-16-2022 09:33 AM

Blazing Saddles , Young Frankenstein the list is a mile long of movies considered great that wouldn't be made today . I watched AITF and found it funny . I never took it too seriously , it's a TV show folks . Just meant to entertain and if it's not your cup of tea that's why there are other channels .

It seems like everything today has to have a cause , nothing can just be enjoyed for what it is . There always has to be a hidden meaning . Sorry guys and gals I just don't have that amount of tin foil on hand 😁

First Season Saturday Night Live, Chevy Chase as the HR person interviewing Richard Pryor. Word association...

masraum 02-16-2022 10:04 AM

I only watched about half of the video above because I don't always enjoy/want to experience those sorts of emotions, but yes, good scene.

For the folks that hated AITF, what about the Jeffersons or Married with Children? I suspect both of those could have been considered similarly offensive for their time.

Another great example and very funny .

Norman Lear pushed prime time critics too far with a sitcom named "All That Glitters". I barely remember it but it was a liberal dream land. All the bosses were women, all the men were secretaries and sex objects AND there was a transgender character. It didn't last too long. Maybe they should try again?

I think the people who hated AITF, were part of the meathead crowd. They got their feelings hurt when PARF came up between Archie and the meathead.
