Fill me in - they turn off all the nannies pulling out of the event?

I recall driving a student's 997 as hard as I could into a turn in an AX course trying to get it to spin out, there wasn't a chance with the controls on. It basically almost stopped itself while continuing to go in the direction I was pointing the wheel.

Co worker who flipped his several months ago says he talked to the DA and will keep his license. Already has a brand new one identical to the one he rolled and seems to have learned/proved that he can talk and buy his way out (new car, fines, insurance) of stupid. The local tire shop is no longer worried about a drop in business.

well with nannies you can never have any kind of angry launch , with smoking tires..
TC would brake the wheels before it even got scary, modern systems are very fast.
Especially if the car is starting to go sideways, or in a peel out.

And it would be audible to all who watches it that the nannies are working..

I think a lot of cars these days have various levels of nanny. IE, regular mode, sport mode, fully disabled. Often some of the intermediate versions will allow some hooning, but still save you from yourself.

well, with the kind of driver that does peel outs and burnouts with onlookers..
I would think they tend to go for fully disabled.
Real men, real drivers, real horse power, need no nannies

with predictable results, off course

might be a marketing/R&D thing..
Cars & Coffee mode

engage all the parking sensors, the wheel sensors, front camera, the GPS to determine location and circumstances.
The suggest a peel out direction on the front camera,
have steering rack control on modern cars, so hands off possible

Set desired burnout length
Flipp a few switches
ARE YOU SURE
HOLD BRAKE
PRESS FULL WOT THE LOUD PEDAL
ARE YOU SURE?
push and hold ABS button left of steering wheel
push and hold TC button right of steering wheel
Let go of brake for launch
Do Dukes of Hazard horn thing

perfectly doable
make sure the wankers have hands off the steering wheel and let the computer do the rest.. bit like a modern day F18 launcing off the carrier, hands off

Obviously Stangs will still plow straight into the crowd regardless. They have a reputation to maintain

My 2600 lb RX7 had over 500HP.

I remember my father wanting to drive it, I was half way through the sentence telling him not to floor it in first or 2nd gears and to be on your toes in 3rd.

He floored it in second gear while I was telling him not to...

We ended up ballast in the car as it came screeching to a stop, pointed the wrong way, on the side of the 3 lane road we were on. I has happy it was a 3 lane road no damage done.

Once we came to a stop, I just said, yeah I think you know not to step in it too hard in 1st and second. Take it easy.

No TC no ABS no air bags, in that car you die like a man.

Impressing the crowd is important...especially a crowd struggling to afford their cell phones.

Well said...and why I don't go to cars and coffees. Also, those lining the sidewalk, egging on the hooning, are fools.

its sad what this does to car culture.

when you have students showing up with 400+hp on the regular, its really hard for them to actually learn car control without wrecking something very expensive first. the best advice i have for such students, who bring there 60 plus grand, 400 + hp car to an event is sell it and by something reasonable. the smart ones show up in a miata, the dumb ones go "road racing is so expensive" while leaning on the hood of a 60+ grand car that could pay for an entire rig, race car, and 3 seasons of racing. and the consumables on these cars make them all but impossible to actually campaign on any reasonable budget.

its sad what the horsepower wars have done to us. all but made it impossible for normal people to actually do things with cars.

in the way actually, i think the EV conversion in motorsports is welcome. power is irrelevant in the EV game because its decoupled from ownership costs and running costs compared to ICE.

Their 60 K car is owned by the bank. Not so easy to work that with a race car/team.

Ambulances and police should be mandatory at all exits at cars and coffee.

No popo, no cars and coffee.

it turns out money is just money. its pretty easy to turn 1000+ dollar car payment + insurance into a cheap truck, race car, and 3 seasons of racing. paying to bank, or paying to the SCCA, its all money. as some point they committed to spending it, just a matter of picking better things to spend it on.

i did the same math. for much of my 20s my goal was to own both my 944 turbo, and a 997.2 C2S. and when i was ~27 years old, i was in the position to buy the 997, and said ... wait, why spend 35-40 grand (this was what 7 years ago?) on a 997 over the next 3 years, when i could buy a truck, trailer, race car, and race for a year or two on that budget.

and so thats what i did. as soon as i started actually racing, i quickly sold all my nice street cars including the 944 turbo, because they are pointless.

Good point. Cold tires didn't help. Unfortunately the driver probably doesn't even know about cold tires. And.... did anyone notice the small car just driving around the accident like nothing happened?
