I worked with a women's provincial team that won a bronze in our national championships. Can confirm that it is an intense, physical, and at times vicious sport.
Combined socials afterwards focused on celebrating the game and the other team -- the viciousness stayed on the field, which made being involved much more pleasurable. |

Love the game. Played from university into my mid 40's when the recovery time increased exponentially. It can be a brutal game at times. Saw plenty of injuries(and suffered a few).
Nothing like an open field tackle from the side as arms are raised to make a pass or dummy. Big impact and you can sometimes hear the air rush out of the lungs. And, usually the ball becomes available. Some of these gals(?) can flat out play Thanks for the post. Helped me remember why so much ***** hurts every day. Be watching the Six Nations games shortly on Peacock.

Legal drinking age at my university when I attended about a thousand years ago was 19. There was a keg at the sideline. The parties afterward were epic. The real contest started at the end of the game.

I don’t know the rules and have never watched it, but it looks brutal and interesting to watch.

I played football (real football, AKA "soccer" here in the States) through college. I was actually fairly good... Anyway, I wound up working with a Brit expatriate some years later who had followed a similar path, except playing rugby. We both continued to play our respective sports into our early 40's. There was, of course, no end to the back and forth regarding football v. rugby. His favorite quip was that "rugby is a hooligans' game played by gentlemen, football is a gentlemen's game played by hooligans".

Played rugby union as a kid. Got to the states and this damn soccer stuff... wanna grab twinkle toes and throw him on the ground. Rugby ruined me for other field sports.
When we played (in elementary school) the rule was you got tackled the person that tackled you helped you up... big penalty if that didn't happen. Like they say, a hooligan's game played by gentlemen. Even today its utterly hypnotizing to watch, they all run like gazelles. It's a proper sport. I love watching rugby league when I'm overseas but still haven't figured out the rules. |

Guy's rugby - different to women's rugby. Yeah had to play it as a kid (here in NZ I think it's the law or somethin'). I hated it because I had to get the late bus home.
I was a big strong kid so they put me in the 1st fifteen. Kinda funny, I'd think we haven't scored a try for a while so I'd just flatten the other kids between me and the try line and score. |

I had the privilege of being in Wales one year when they hosted the Four Nations, a rugby tournament. We were there long enough to have had our hosts take us to a couple of games (we had a big repair on a 767). I was impressed. Live, in person, close enough to the pitch to "feel" the hits. Those boys are tough. And yes, in each and every case, the harder they took their opponent down, the more gracious they were in helping him up.

My wife played rugby for our college team, and has a few gnarly injuries to prove it (biggest one being a broken ankle which required two surgeries and a bunch of hardware). As stated above, the socials were epic... those ladies can throw down.

My club has had a women's side for many years. Some of the women can flat out play, others are trying and having fun.
We host a yearly tourney that is coed and more social than competitive, Women are not hit hard, usually wrapped and lightly put to ground. OTOH, they play for keeps. One of our guys, a stud Inside Center, was chased 30 meters, caught, dropped and stripped by one of the women. He still hears about it to this day. Premiership * Falcons/Chiefs shortly.

As a rookie for my Union rugby club (not that lame league version) I had to coach our women's side. They weren't vicious but they played hard and counted on technique more than force.
BTW I always got a kick out of telling the uninitiated that I was a hooker.

I played in one club rugby game at Union College in Schenectady, NY. A friend of mine went there and his fraternity was in the club league.
I played HS football but I was completely unprepared (I would offer ill-informed) on how to engage other players, both tackling and being tackled. There is a lot of technique involved that I did not get the memo on. I didn't get hurt but had a wicked headache due to said poor technique. The social was indeed fantastic. I learned a lot of new songs ![]()

When I was playing high school football a bunch of us started playing rugby in the summer. The coaches made us quit because of too many injuries. We were tackling like we had shoulder pads and helmets on.

Yeah man that was the main training we had to do whenever a football player joined up. Rugby tackling is complete different for two reasons: 1 you aren't wearing any protection and more importantly 2 in Rugby you want to control the man with the ball so it can be stripped out of his hands. If you put him on the ground then he must release the ball and it's on. If you've ever been at the bottom of a ruck you know what I mean.
