It’s some kind of subculture thing, underground hobby and a real means of dependable communication in some places. My dad is a ham guy. Always has been. His basement has about a hundred grand worth of radios (just like joe walsh photo above) and transmitters on racks hooked up to computers, some from submarines, Morris code key things and microphones. When I lived with him, I always heard bleeps and blips and squelch and people talking in foreign languages. When I go there now, I hear the radios blipping from down there. I should take a photo Sunday when I’m there. It’s pretty mind blowing

He has two houses and both are equipped with these mammoth tall antennas

Btw, I have 4 SW radios. Love ‘em, but unlike my dad or these guys on YouTube, I can’t pull anything in. These guys get some sorta rush outta dx-ing or whatever they call it…..sorta like listening for Martian signals and actually hearing one

And I know it’s gotta be some sorta rush or unique gratification because honestly, most of what you hear out there is not in English. I’ve asked my dad what’s all the noise and he’ll say - I’m so excited because I just listened to a guy transmitting for 20 minutes in Latvia. I’m like huh? My dad only speaks English….he gets a thrill from finding the voices or transmissions. It ain’t so easy

No power. They are a crystal set...
