Macan and Panamera production halted!

The car purchasing world for the past few years has been an interesting one to follow. In recent news, we've seen the unfortunate cargo ship fire, ongoing supply chain issues, and now sources state what is happening in Ukraine has resulted in the closing of factories and stalling of production lines.

1/3 of Porsche's sales in 2021 came from the Macan, so this potentially could be a major issue for them, especially their projections of 2022 being another record year. However, this plus the cars lost in the Atlantic may not enable this possibility any longer.

Flatsix has reported on this here for further details.

Quote:
The company’s factory in Leipzig, Germany will halt production of its most popular model, the small Macan CUV, as well as its large Panamera luxury sedan and wagon. A Porsche spokesperson told Automotive News that the production suspension would begin on Wednesday afternoon and run at least through the end of next week.

Production will be maintained this week for Taycan and 911 models built at the Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen factory, says Porsche.

Porsche has been sourcing wiring harnesses from western Ukraine alongside sibling brands Volkswagen and Skoda. The harness supply incoming from Ukraine has been exhausted, and the current wartime disruption of supply means that the company doesn’t have any further harnesses with which to continue building Macans or Panameras.

Wow, that could turn out to be a pretty big deal.

Gonna be interesting to see how the Ukraine situation plays out across all manufacturers.

As far as harnesses go, tell them we have a Pelican making those for the older cars. How hard can it be to update?

Porsche would own the IP rights to the harness, right? That's not a design build contract, like a Bosch fuel injection system. So they could move manufacturing to Germany?

Moving manufacturing requires moving tooling to make the stuff. I wouldn't think that would be a solution for the short term.

I was thinking about Stuttgart. I guess the issue is enough space. Germany is also crazy for Coco Puffs when it comes to regulations and constructing new buildings, especially in the cities.
