Get off my lawn!
|
Almost had my yeard mowed for free!
I returned from a quick errand, and noticed a professional yard crew unloading to mow the law. They parked the pickup, and long mowing trailer in front of my house, but I did not think much of that and the front yard of my house is really long and nearly two normal lots wide.
Anyway I heard the mowers fire up and I know my next door neighbor has his yard mowed by the company with the logo on the pickup. I looked out a few minutes later and they were mowing my yard. ![]() I am a cheap old geezer that needs the exercise so I always mow my own yard. I have to admit it crossed my mind to do nothing, and let them mow my yard. As I as I had not told them to mow it, I could refuse to pay, and have a free mowing. I just am not that guy. So I went out front to stop them. It was a team of Mexicans and only one spoke English. I pointed out they were mowing the wrong yard. He pulled out the job sheet, and it clearly had my neighbor's name and address. I pointed at his yard and said you missed by one yard. I asked that they finish the strip of yard between the sidewalk and the street they has started on, just to make it look even and presentable. They agreed, and finished that very small area and moved to the neighbors yard. The first mowing of the year always sucks with Bermuda grass. Lots of dead stuff to mow down and bag up to get rid of it. That allows the sun to hit the roots and it will start growing. It would be nice to have them do it, but it just is not right to make them do the work for free.

Legally they would probably have a right to demand payment if you knew what they were doing and took no action. But I'd guess they would have dropped it. Still, your solution is the best one. Just be upfront with people. Works for me too, Glen.

Hmmm...a Yeard - cross between a beard and a yard...or maybe a beard that's really long and thick, so kind of like a yard. But oh, that mower would hurt something awful!
...oh, right - a team of mowers! Yikes! Last edited by OK-944; 03-05-2022 at 01:40 PM.. |

Yeah, if you saw them doing it, and knew that they were just mistaken, and let them finish, you'd (since you knew) have a responsibility to pay (by my standards, and I suspect by your standards too. You seem like a "do the right thing" kind of guy.) If you got home and they'd just finished, that would be something else.

Ok, yeard is just a stupid typo from fat finger typing.
Or maybe it was my many years of living in Alabama, and a thick southern accent. Mostly, just no spell checking and no way to edit a title.

A family friend bought a summer place in FL last year.
She didn't like the tile in the pool so contracted to have it replaced. Tile crew shows up, does the job but finds they are short materials. They call the GC and tell him he either screwed up his measurements or the supplier shorted them. GC drives over, goes into friends yard to find no work done and his crew in the neighbors yard. No one had been home at either house.

You CAN edit a title. But if you wait to long it only edits the title after opening the thread.

Last year a local landscape company spread fertilizer and weed killer on my yard by mistake. I was not home at the time but saw them on my security camera. They left a bill on my door knob but it was addressed to my neighbor. I called them and they apologized for the error and thanked me for letting them know so that they could come back and do the correct lawn which was 2 houses down. The supervisor told me that they go by GPS and it must have been off.

G'day!
|
For the first 23 years I lived here, there was a vacant lot behind me. The area I live in at the north end of the barrier island has always been in demand and there are not many vacant lots available.
The persons who owned the lot didn't do the greatest job keeping it moved so I would mow it myself - just to give the appearance it wasn't just a vacant lot - so it wouldn't attract anyone's attention as much - and get sold to someone. Eventually a guy bought it along with a lot behind it right on the water upon which he built a huge house that subsequently blocked my view. He watched me mow this vacant lot and never said a word to me until one day we had a chat and he confessed and thanked me (with a little sarcastic laugh no less) for doing all the mowing. He was a bit of an asswipe and ended up dying from cancer a few years later, which I think was karma, although of course I wouldn't wish something like that on anyone. Eventually his widow sold the house and later the lot behind me and another asswipe bought it and built another big ugly house. Again, I wish them no harm but you know karma has a way of leveling the playing field sometimes. Here's a video from May 2007 I shot of my 2 girls romping with each other in that vacant lot before it was developed.....you can see his house to the left....... Billabong used to hop around like a little roo!

Back in 2009, I got laid off so I worked a few months for my friend who has a landscape business.
One day after mowing we stopped to do one last job involving clearing out bushes, trees and other vegetation along the boarder of the back yard. We used shovels, chainsaws, an ax and our strength to remove all this. Took about 3 hours and created a very large amount of debris that we hauled to the curb out front and left. The end result was quite drastic. I preferred it the way it was because of the privacy and it looked nice. I kept wondering why the homeowner wanted this done. Whatever The next day, the guy calls and asks why we never showed up to do the job. Huh? Wrong house. I have always wondered what the homeowners must have thought about what they found upon returning home. Still cracks me up thinking about this We never said a word about it and have no idea who owned that house

I've always mowed my own lawn until I broke my neck a few years ago mountain biking. Been too lazy to stop the services since.
My got fixed by mistake story: I was showing a friend my 930 in the garage and telling him the story about my young son knocking over my wife's motorcycle and it landing on the rear 930 flare. Not a huge dent but very noticeable. When I went to show him the dent it was gone!!! I had my car in the shop to do some tweaking on the new EFI system recently so I called the shop and said you've probably never gotten a call like this before but when I took my car in it had a dent and when I got it back the dent was gone. The shop owner said that explains why the other guy with the black Porsche was pissed that he hadn't fixed his dent like he was supposed to. I thanked him and asked what I owed him. He said don't worry about it just tell the story about how his shop took care of it.

Get off my lawn!
|
Back when I had a regular job and went to work 5 days a week I came home one day and found someone had fertilized my yard and left a bill on the front door. I called him, and explained I take care of my own yard and had already fertilized two weeks before. I told him he was one yard off, and it was that same house next door that was supposed to be treated. He said I could ignore the bill. I told him I was not insist he come vacuum up the fertilizer, but I would have to water like mad to prevent burning the grass. I had a really GREEN yard that year and had to mow twice per week all spring. I was not real happy about that.
The house next door has gone through two owners in thee 24 years we have lived here, and both do a great job of hiring the yard work. It looks nice, and the neighborhood is happy.
