My daughter knows her vodka - I guess

My daughter just turned 21, so we took her out to dinner. We told the waiter and he was happy to serve her her first adult beverage. He suggested a nice pineapple juice based drink. She asked what kind of alcohol was in it. He said it had vodka in it. She then asked, "What brand?" I think maybe it wasn't her first adult beverage. We all had a good laugh, especially the waiter.

Happy 21st to your daughter.

She sounds like a smart girl - discrete about her having a teensy weensy drink here and there.

Suddenly it all makes sense why the drinks cabinet was shrinking rapidly although you weren't drinking any more than usual.

When a teen, my father asked me if I had any idea why his liquor was tasting 'watered down'
hmm.

Perhaps in this political climate she just wanted to make sure it wasn't Russian?

I'm having a hard time with this as I prefer Russian Standard. Wife likes Titos, mainly bc it is made in Texas.

As to the OP, I had a text exchange with my son this weekend, he is 21. He was asking if Guinness is good from can. I had to explain the widget thing to him and the taste difference between the widget kind and regular bottles. Being a poor college student he opted out since it is about $10 per 6. I'm pretty sure he is on Natty Light

To me the can with the widget is lacking most of the flavor of the extra stout.

I'm happy to have Guinness draft out of a tap, that tastes different from the cans and bottles with the widgets. If I've got to drink Guinness and it's not coming out of a keg, then I want the Extra Stout because it has more flavor.

When I was in my early 20s, someone brought some guinness to our apt. We put it in the beer fridge with the other stuff and got it ice cold. WHen it's ice cold and you're used to drinking "normal" or "cheap" beer, it's probably going to seem REALLY bitter. It's tastier if it's "cool" instead of "ice cold". We ended up not drinking that ice cold extra stout. Now I drink lots of different kinds of stout, and when I'm wanting something "light" I go for the Guinness Extra Stout.

Interesting

Yeah, probably not. I would be surprised if most kids make it to 21 without having some experience. Hell, most probably start getting that experience when they are 15-17, so by the time they are 21, they are probably pretty proficient.

One thing all adults should do after they have left home and made it to their 30s, is go to mom and dad's house and start to tell some of the things they got away with as kids. t is best if you have siblings, and they are all there.

One of my buddies was convinced his daughter was the perfect little angle while she lived with them. She turned 21 and was married and already had her first kid. They met her and her husband at a restaurant on her 21st birthday. She promptly started asking about the wine selection, and it was obvious she was very knowledgeable about wine, and what she liked.

My buddy said he sat there stunned that his little girl that used to sit in his lap clutching her teddy bear as he read her a story was all grow up.

Here you go, little girl...try some Crater Lake Vodka. Guaranteed to rot your brain. Distilled in Oregon. One sip will turn you into a socialist.

Happy Birthday anyway...

My father helped move me into the dorm for my first year of college. That was also the first year of the 18 year old drinking law.

He was really impressed to see a full size keg of beer at each end of my floor. I told him to not mention it to Mom when he got home.

I didn't think my kid could make the jump from Natty Light to the Extra Stout. Extra flavor? Yep and probably too much for a youngster to appreciate.

HE double toothpicks, I think he drinks hard seltzers too. I remember when my palate wasn't ready for an IPA or Guinness. Got cured of that when I lived in England in my early 20's.

My youngest kid got an apartment with a buddy, the minute he graduated from high school. My first trip over there was shortly thereafter and already they had amassed a sizable collection of empty bottles, as they kept them all as some sort of trophy. I spotted an empty bottle of Vueve Cliquot and decided I needed to take a better look. I found a good assortment of anejo tequila bottles and a little lightbulb went off in my head. Apparently, most of the stock that they had consumed had come from my house.

He named his dog Malibu, because he couldn’t keep him away from a rum and Coke.

I grew up with dad as an Air Force officer. We lived on base at Maxwell, AFB when I was in high school. The base provided us with a cheap built in fridge in the kitchen. We owned a good fridge and my parents wanted to keep it for when dad retires. We kept the spare fridge in my bedroom. We kept the leftovers and dad kept his beer in there. So had cold beer in my bedroom in high school.

At one party (lots of parties for social events to get to know fellow officers) the men were told if you want beer, it is in my son's room. More than a few eyebrows were raised. I knew not to drink his beer. It was not hard to buy beer on base even as a 16 or 17 year old, and I did hide a few beers in the there, but getting the empties out was a challenge without raising suspicion. I learned it was safer to just go out.

If any parent thinks their children don't drink before they are 21, as well as other things, I am a bit surprised.

My Daughter is not a drinker but my son was in High School. They had beach parties here and I had two rules: Their parents must let me know they approve and no one leaves the farm until the next day. All car keys in my house.

The parents were always on point and the kids just seemed relieved to be able to BBQ and have a beer without looking over their shoulder.

We never had any issues.

And yes, they both did other stuff they thought would surprise me. My response?

"Whatever you did was Double A at best...I played for the SF Giants".

All true.

What Boozers ye all are..

I never had a touch of the hard stuff till I was 9, before then it was just beer and wine..

I once raised a glass of what I thought was Gin to my lips, only to spit it out exclaiming, "It's WATER!"

My motto is a glass of Gin the first thing in the morning and it will take the edge off till lunch..

^^^ Mother hid the bottle?
Ours was easy to find....underneath the kitchen sink, in the corner.
