You know the different between a Zippo and a Hippo?




A hippo is a rather large animal, while a zippo is a little lighter!

Virtually anything man makes has it's collectors. The zippo above is cool. Evidently, Vietnam era Zippos are sought after.

Nitze (on the Zippo) was an important figure in history. Kennedy appointed him as Secretary of the Navy (1963-1967). He played a critical role in the Cuba Missile Crisis.

I was pondering recently why in film and TV when a bad guy starts a big fire, he/she always tosses a Zippo lighter to start the fire. Don't they know those things cost money? Not like a dollar Bic at the 7-11.

I had my grandfather's Zippo in my pants pocket on a training mission at the National Training Center, Ft. Irwin, CA. I had not idea the reason he had stopped using it was because it leaked. After my crew was 'killed' we were sitting around and I felt my leg burning. That fluid had leaked out and was burning my leg. Big red spot. Sort of turned me off from carrying a Zippo.

You overfilled it. The trick is to let it burn a minute or two after refilling to burn the excess out of the packing. I quit smoking long ago, but hung on to the old zippos. The last one I carried was solid brass, 1982 commemorative celebrating their 50th. Zippo engraved my signature on it's face. Another is just a chrome one I bought through a Pano ad in the 60's, has a small Porsche crest on it's face. The other is my dad's old lighter...just a standard chrome one, the chrome worn to brass in spots. I doubt any of them are worth much to anybody but me.

If I had to bet, I'd bet your grandfather also carried a spare flint or two under that
solid top layer of the packing. I hope you still have it...

Oh...you can toss a lit zippo..a bic goes out the second you let go.

One of them. I’ll vote C.F. Martin & CO’s guitars as maybe the greatest American company and product ever- great museum in Nazareth PA……


Since quitting smoking my zippos don’t get much use and they always had a habit of being empty when needed, even when I was diligent in filling them. I still like them, especially the brass ones


Case, I like too. Honestly, though, I’ve got quite a few and every single one of them no matter if new or old, has side to side blade play which bugs me. I still buy them on occasion and wouldn’t mind at all going to the museum


Looks one could make a weekend out of it and go to the Martin and case/zippo museums since both in PA

There was a Zippo store not far from my house when I was a kid. Never figured how they sold enough to stay in business just selling lighters. And in the end they didn't.

My favorite lighter ever is the Parker service lighter. I have an original WWII era one that still has the black covering on it. I actually miss smoking because I can’t use it anymore. Back in the 90s when I moved to NYC I was walking down 8th avenue on my first day at work, lighting a cig during rush hour foot traffic and bumped into a guy as I was on top of one of those drainage grates that are about 15 foot deep. It flew out of my hand and down to the bottom it went. So I’m starting this new job and all I could think about was my lighter down at the bottom of this drainage pit. On my lunch break a found a hardware store in Hell’s Kitchen and bought a ball of string and a magnet and went back and fished it out…people in NYC don’t usually stop to look at what people are doing but they did and a small crowd formed around me. One of my favorite memories of my time there. I still have it, and the string, and the magnet

Zippo stopped making these (really nice little tape measures) a number of years back. At least they stopped doing custom printed ones.

We used to give them out to our customers. Lots of people I know would send them back in and get the measuring tapes replaced.

Pretty much every engineer in our industry carried one of these around. And we used them all the time. Dual scale - with inches and mm.

I'm kind of nostalgic about stuff like this....

The cool Vietnam zippos are the trench art ones that soldiers would carve or engrave themselves or have engraved somewhere over there? Do a google image search……really really cool stuff.

I have an old Martin electric guitar from the 80's. It sounds great and still looks like new. I think those were made in Korea and assembled here.
