If you’re interested in having someone sharpen, saw this while watching YOLO last night.

I've been very happy with my Worksharp Ken Onion.

Yep. The hook develops. A steel or strop should straighten that out, but it can just roll it over to the other side.

A piece of glass or marble and wet dry sand paper. A few sprits of water on the glass or marble to stick the paper and a few sprits on the surface to make a slurry. I sharpen all my good knives, chisels and plane blades with this method.

Yep, lots of folks use it. A pack of wet/dry sandpaper in a couple/few grits and you're sharpening a lot of stuff. I've not used that method myself, but it's very popular.

Good thinking. And using a nice fine 1500 or 2000 grade paper it's nicer to the blade than most sharpeners.

^^^yes. This is the “scary sharp” method I refer to prior. Works great.

Buy a Shun chef's knife. It will give you a new understanding of the concept of sharp. I think they cut with less friction than a razor blade.

^^i recommended the worksharp field sharp earlier which is basically the same thing without benchmande’s name on it and they are $30

I have been using gerber BG folders on the bales which is sharoen periodically with a steel and these have been fine.

I’m shocked at the suggestion to not use my Benchmade for utility purposes. This defeats the purpose of having it - kinda like not driving a 911.

You don’t use a box cutter on bales. If the blade breaks, you risk turning livestock into dead stock.

I will look at a sharpening tool - thank you.

OK but I'd pay the extra $20 because the Benchmade one is not made in China (I hope)

It would help to know which model you have. Not every sharpener is compatible, depending on blade size

My KME is amazing but no good for very small pocket knives and not great for large chef knives

The field sharpener above is no good for a very large blade etc…..

This is why I have at least 5 sharpeners…..

I also have a Smith's DCS4 Diamond Combo Bench Stone
$20 and fits in a coat pocket
I only just got it last week but so far I like it and it’s definitely worth $20

I would also keep a good leather strop with green compound

and please familiarize yourself with using a sharpy marker to mark the edge so you can see if you are even hitting it...you could be sharpening for hours and not doing anything at all. I learned this the hard way

ramonesfreak 03-23-2022 04:44 AM

i used this for years. it works. but, i wouldnt bother unless you also buy the extra diamond rods....i also have the extra fine ceramic rods which i recommend but admit, not necessary
