This incident was with a 737-800 NG. These do not have the MCAS system that could result in runaway elevator trim. That was an issue on the 737-MAX series.

It is unnerving that as the aircraft descended, for about 2-3 minutes, no distress call from the flight crew was made.

It's been reported Air Traffic Control attempted to contact the crew several times with no response.

More like a 7xx mph to zero impact.

Flew LaGuardia to Cleveland once in a 737. Massive tail wind and flight was super late and it had the after burners on. Heard pilots talking to each other saying they/we were close to Mach 1 ground speed when we departed the jet in Cle. And that was without gravity assist.

Exactly. Hopefully the DFDR (digital flight deck recorder) data is available. This would yield some audio information that could give an indication of what the flight crew was experiencing.

And unfortunately, we’ll likely never hear the whole story.

I am fairly certain there arent afterburners on 737s or any other commercial aircraft (maybe the concord?).

He was being tongue-in-cheek.

There are no AB's on any current airliners.

I hope we get the rest of the story.

There was an earlier link in this thread that was fantastic.

BTW, pilot suicide is a real concern in some accident profiles: I have done two military accident investigations and the Flight Surgeons do discuss the probability.

“At present, it is unclear whether it is a data recorder or a cockpit voice recorder,” that has been found, said Mao Yanfeng, an official at the Civil Aviation Administration of China.

You can bet Air Force One has after burners but then it isn't a commercial airliner is it.

rumlyne 03-23-2022 09:09 AM

i'll take that bet!!

It has a screw jack driven flying tail. The run away stab issue long predates MCAS and the associated issues. I don't think there is a screw jack stab in service without a standing AD against it.

I would happily take that bet.

You don't do afterburners on high bypass turbo fans.

Unimageable how horrific this would have been for the passengers.

This. Not a lot of time, but every moment sheer terror. The only silver lining...no pain.

speeder 03-23-2022 11:21 AM

I understand suicide but I don't understand taking 130 innocent strangers with you and making them die in an unimaginably horrible way(?)

asphaltgambler 03-23-2022 11:33 AM

Because suicide is in itself ...........selfish.

Terrifying.

Wasn't there also a flight out of JFK, where the pilot and co-pilot were fighting the controls? Egypt Air?

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (MH370/MAS370) was a scheduled international passenger flight operated by Malaysia Airlines that disappeared on 8 March 2014 while flying from Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia to its planned destination
