I have an iPhone 8+ with now T-Mobile service. I get 5G. The person who told you that is ignorant or a jerk. Maybe you would need a new sim card?

You may want to double check. Everything I can find says the iPhone 8 is not 5G capable. No matter, as others have said, 4G wil be around for a while.
