I think these work the easiest because they don't have to be at a right angle to remove the filter. Just grab it at any angle.

This sort of thing only works if you've got several inches of access to the side of the filter. It's not unusual for the only open space to be at the "bottom" of the filter.

That experience convinced me I'd never take my car back to the dealer for oil changes even if they were offered to me for free.

+1. Everytime the dealer does the previous oil change, I wind up having to use the vampire stab the housing with a screwdriver method of removal. Whenever I do the previous oil change, the filter spins right off with a filter wrench.
