What is my pick up truck tow capacity?

Hi guys,
Hi guys, I am looking for info on how much my pick up truck can tow, can someone be able to double check for me?

My truck is:
Automatic
2005, Ford ranger Edge
engine size: I think it is 3.2L but after search, I don't even see 3.2L is even available. So, it must be 2.3L
I have a tow hitch bolted right on the rear metal bumper, which I use to step on it to get in the trunk.

So, is it that I can carry max 2,260lbs on my trunk (without trailer)
If I tow/pull a trailer and a boat, then the trailer and the boat need to be max is 5,500lbs? Am I correct?

These websites are what I think have the most info to me, but still not very sure:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/specs/2005-2/2005-ford-ranger-2/
2005 Ford Ranger - Specs

This is what I read about those terminologies:
https://www.curtmfg.com/towing-capacity

Go to your truck and look at your engine. There should be a tag in the engine compartment saying whether it is a 3.0 or 4.0.

The only real way to find out is to take it to a tractor pull... you will find out pretty quickly what you can pull.

With all due respect , if you don't know a basic fact like what engine you have maybe you shouldn't be worrying about max capacity of your truck .

If it is a v6...most likely the 3.0 engine. I owned an 04 Ranger Edge with the 3.0 for 14 years.
Did you purchase it lately...and how many miles?

stevej,
I was too lazy to go out there at 2am . yes sir, I do it now. I am trying to find out how big of a boat I can tow

Thanks guys.

... yes, 3.0l. So look like I can carry 2,600lb or tow 6,000lbs the trailer.

Thanks.

All bets are off if you literally have a bumper hitch. You probably have a frame hitch, welded or bolted to the frame.

No.
The data you provided shows a max payload of 1260 lb. That includes all passengers and cargo.

No!
The data shows a maximum towing capacity of 2260lb.
Pay attention to both the maximum towing capacity and maximum gross combined vehicle weight rating. The combination of the curb weight of the the truck, the payload, and the towing weight can't exceed the MCGVWR.

wdfifty,
sorry, I provided wrong data. It's 3.0l. So, it's 2600lbs/6000lbs. I think. Am I correct?

This site, I looked at first, is missing the GCWR label:
2005 Ford Ranger - Specs

, but this site does have it:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/specs/2005-2/2005-ford-ranger-2/

This is the reason why I was so confused. Now, I know it's 6000lbs I can tow. I am happy.

Thanks.

A Ranger isn't much of a truck imo, not for towing a larger boat. It's not just capacity.... tow vehicle size, footprint, pulling out of steep, wet ramps, etc. I would not have wanted to tow my 18' Stratos bass boat with one... YMMV.

1. curb weight depends on the body configuration
2. 1260 payload
3. 2600 towing
4. 6000 MGCVW

now I am not happy ...I only can tow 2600lbs, even if I am not carry anything in the cabin nor the trunk. Am I right?

I was looking at this, and thought it's 6000lbs that I can tow.

No. The max towing weight is 2600lb no matter what is in the truck. These are all maximums for the individual loads. You can't increase towing capacity by not using payload, and you can't increase payload by not using towing.

1. curb weight depends on the body configuration
2. 1260 payload
3. 2600 towing
4. 6000 MGCVW

KC, I search on the Stratos bass boat and see around 3000lbs. That is about Dave's 17' Arima. So, you wouldn't recommend me to tow even around that size/weight? that is sad
Just found that my ranger can tow even less than my Sienna O_O. Worst case, I take the Sienna to tow up to 3,500lbs.

Got it WDfifteen. And that is "period" or adding 40lbs-50lbs is ok with driving slow and careful?

Thanks everyone.

I towed my Stratos for 27 years ... with some really sucky tow vehicles at times...

that I would have gladly traded for a Ranger !

But for a boat of any weight... I'd want more... jmho. I've pulled lighter boats out with friends' Rangers over the years ... great for smaller boats!

KC,
argh... you confused me. I thought you said "I would not have wanted to tow my 18' Stratos bass boat with one".
let say, If you have a ranger like mine, would you tow a 3,500lbs anyway?

I saw some clips of someone tow a sport boat looks decent size like 17'-19' (wild guess) with old beat up honda accord. Dangerous, I think so, but not sure how dangerous it is.

When my cousin first got a boat, he had a Nissan pickup to tow it. I think the boat was a 17' Boston Whaler. When he got a bigger boat, he got a diesel truck.

Sorry to confuse ... would I have pulled my 18' with a Ranger ... well yeah . But that's about it ... not any bigger. Rangers are fantastic for smaller boats ...

Do not be tempted to exceed the maximum towing weight . Your insurance will be invalid, breaking the law, and risking life and limb

Consider a load leveling & anti sway hitch.
It will not increase your towing capacity but it will give you more control and make towing safer.

I had a 3/4 ton truck with a 20 foot enclosed trailer that benefited greatly from a load leveler.
Currently my 1 ton dually with a larger trailer does not require the load leveler.

Not saying you should, but I towed weights over 3500 many times with my 04 Edge.
The Edge package includes better springs and shocks and more ground clearance.
Here is a pic of mine

I sold it three years ago because of the Ranger TSB for valve seat recession. (04-06)
It wasn't worth replacing the cyl heads with 140K miles.
