AR opinions
Just wanted to get the temperature on a couple of things AR15 related. I'm in process of finishing off a build and have some decisions to make. Due to really good deal, I ended up with flat dark earth lower and black upper. I really didn't care because it saved a bunch of money but right now it needs something to look better.
Current look: ![]() How to you feel about painted AR15? Something like was used in "Shooter" or "American Sniper". ![]() What about grips and buttstock being different colors without paint? (2 tone look) Ditto for dust cover and carry handle being flat dark earth vice black? Lastly, thoughts on carry handle mounted holographic/red dot sight/scope vice DXing the carry handle and just using a rail to mount the optics? (DXing = direct exchange, Army slang when you go to CIF to pick up field gear or when you want to get rid of a poor performing troop)

Your rifle, paint it if you want to.
Same with mis-matched furniture colors. Go for what you want. Personally I don't care what color as long as it is comfortable, feels "right" and works well. Did intentionally mis-match a grip on my pistol AR just to be able ot quickly identify the lower so I wouldn't accidentally put the 9mm short upper on a rifle receiver (breaking the NFA.... ) Never been a fan of the carry handles, and would use fixed stand alone irons w/ a red dot mounted on rail that is set up to cowitness. |

For an AR? The uglier the better, I think. The two-tone rattle-can treatment would meet my specification.

Those are very cool. On the one photo I quoted, how does the front/rear sight work with that optic? Or does it? Do you look thru the rear sight hole then thru the optic and even then still the front sight?

No, you just look through the optic. You don't use the iron sights when you have an optic mounted.

That's what I was thinking but the optic looks like it is in direct line with the rear sight.

Well, you can co-witness with the irons if the red dot fails. Cant tell if that is hinged to flip to side like my sig Juliet but doesn’t seem like it but shouldn’t matter.

I have the irons co-witnessed with the red dot on my SIG 556.
Pretty sure an accurate copy of CK's rifle would require a stamp. I'd be careful about putting a foregrip on a sub-16" gun with a pistol brace. ATF is itching to call that an SBR.

Here's Karl explaining the guns at ISS. They had them built and supply the majority of firearms and blank ammo to the film industry.
The M4/ Mark 18 is at the end (13:35 mark) and Karl is good at explaining the differences and modifications in the weapons:

I've never been a fan of paint on firearms. It chips and wears off. Granted, some really like the look offered by a little bit of that kind of wear, just not for me. I prefer finishes that are "in" rather than "on" the material, especially on firearms that will see rough use.
That said, I hunted with a guide in Alaska one time who had painted both the fiberglass stock and the barreled action on his home made '98 Mauser .458 Winchester Magnum. He used Rustoleum on both. He told me he just wire wheeled the whole thing after separating the barreled action from the stock. Did it once a year in the off season. His reasoning was that any "nice" finish got absolutely trashed every season anyway, and this was something he could do at home with readily available materials. I have to say, his rifle did look the business towards the end of the season when I met him.

Is it just me or was the woman oddly stroking and grabbing the silencer/suppressor at the end of the video clip?
I swear, I'm like Beavus and Butthead or any other 8th grade boy.

Yeah. I thought she was going to start licking the stock of the Remington when she found out Brad Cooper’s cheek rested on it!
I think she’s more inclined to selling phone apps. She reminds me of the videos they used to sell at Gun Shows with “top heavy” gals in bikinis and high heels firing automatic weapons. |

if the look really matters to you, rather then ergonomic or shooting qualities,
go big or go home with the paint ![]() Nobody will mess with a man who is comfortable enough with his manhood, to show up at the range with a pink AR.

I saw an interview with a guy who carried a pink 9mm. He said that if he ever had to pull it on someone that it would give him an extra 2 seconds while they were thinking "WTF?".
