Sometime in the early '80's these planes were melted down

Melted down for the metals . These were 23 of the 33 Argus built for sub hunting, I believe. A few were crashed and a few are on display. Sad that, as they were a well loved plane, I think. Quite a few were based in my home town, squadron 413. Lots of history.

Interesting. Both times that I lived in Japan, these were ubiquitous

As a kid, I'd see these multiple times a day every day.

We lived near CFB Greenwood in the last years of the Argus. They rattled the dishes in the cupboards as they flew the pattern. We got tours through both the Argus and the Aurora (Canadian version of the Orion) during air shows back in the day. Crews loved the old beasts.

That is an Orion. Lockheed design. It's hard to believe the newest ones in service are about 40 years old.

Argh. In the 60's they melted down Spitfires to make Triumph motorbikes. I think I'd rather melt down the Triumphs to make Spitfires.

Yep, P3 Orion. We lived on an AFB with a heavy Navy presence in northern Japan. I'm sure our guys spent a ton of time watching and listening to Russia's stuff at the far eastern end of Russia.

The Argus could fly into a hurricane and come out the other side.

I live in the flight path of NAS JAX and a Orion flew over the other day. The new P8s fly over daily and all go through NAS JAX I believe. From the road you can count 30+ sitting on the flight line.

REO = RESERVE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY?

What's the acronym stand for?

REO if I'm not mistaken, is either Radar Electronics Officer or Radio Electronics Officer. The hearing degradation reminded me of my eldest brother who was a communications guy in the RCAF in the 50s and 60s. Substantial hearing loss in both ears.
I also worked briefly with a guy who had been in the navy and suffered hearing loss from searching through the communications channels ( looking for the Soviets) and suddenly getting hit with a blast of jamming.
The electronic switches these days can cut out the spikes and save a lot of pain and hearing loss.

I rode a P-3 Orion from my squadron, VX-1, into CFB Greenwood in the late 1980's for a three day conference with the RCAF and Navy.

I remember nothing of the conference. What I do remember is learning how to play "Crud" at the O'Club in Greenwood, specifically "Combat Crud".

Thank you. I just loaded "REO Canadian air force" into Google.
