He clearly has the speed to come from behind to win. The Preakness is slightly shorter than the Derby so distance at The Preakness isn't a problem. Should he win the Preakness the question is does he have the stamina for the Belmont? In both his maiden race and the Derby he was accelerating at the finish so stamina appears to be on side. Time will tell.

LOL.... yeah, that's what great about watching the replay... announcing the "long shot, come from the back of the pack" win ... and they just yammer on about a couple of losers the whole time while it happens ... doh!

I love pulling for the underhorse :D

It sure appeared obvious in the announcers defense.

What freaks me out is a single horse can blow by a group of top world class race horses like they were standing still. It's a physical marvel.

Was Rich Strike gifted with a monstro heart like Secretariat?

The jockey gets a lot of the credit for that win. How he got thru the traffic was masterful. Once he was in the clear, the horse put the hammer down.

I like this overhead view.

^^^ Agree 100 % . The jockey layed back for half the race preserving the horses surge stamina . Then the jockey did a surgeons carving one horse at a time . When clear the jockey engaged the horses high gear . Just a masterful outing for the rider and horse . It was very enjoyable to see.

I know nothing about horse racing, but every few years I'll throw $20 on a long shot just for entertainment. Glad I did this year!! Wow, what a race!

The chatter on the equine forums about the outrider has been hysterical. Folks are upset with him for manhandling RS. BS. A stallion latched on to another horse is a recipe for disaster, and that particular outrider is one of the most experienced in the business.

Seahawk 05-09-2022 08:19 AM

The Outrider did fantastic. Most people have no idea what he was dealing with.

CurtEgerer 05-09-2022 10:00 AM

Yeah, I know nothing about that but watching him my thought was that he is one extremely experienced horse handler! That could have been ugly in lesser hands.

The first week of Vet School one of the old Profs drew a 12" circle on the blackboard and said "This is a chicken brain".

Then he drew a 2" circle and said "This is a horse brain".

I laughed, having ridden horses all my life. I love'em but they can kill you without even trying.

I know I'll be more inclined to watch the next race (Preakness?)

A great race for the sport.

Preakness is next. Most likely a completely different field of horses, a few from the Derby will show but most won't

I expect Rich Strike to be in there for the race.

He's got a bone to pick with that pony that was trying to lead him around. :D

drcoastline 05-09-2022 01:34 PM

Hahaha, he'll be there, he is the only one with a shot at the triple crown.

drcoastline 05-09-2022 01:35 PM

Hahaha, you can guarantee he'll be there, he is the only one with a shot at the triple crown.

This particular Kentucky Derby, is an epic come from behind victory. During a recent conversation with another Pelican we touched on what it reminded us of? What past great unabashed effort by an athlete that was so all out, all or nothing effort that it was burned into our memory. I was quietly thinking it, when our fellow Pelicanite blurted out, Franz Klammer!

The downhill at the 1976 olympics, Franz Klammer, like Rich Strike, is another of those memorable all out efforts, very exciting!

For those that weren't alive then, here it is:

The owner of the winning horse lives in Edmond, OK a small suburb of Oklahoma City.

They said he is a regular at a local off track betting site and the regulars there were all screaming and cheering. One of the ladies that takes the bets even put $2 on his horse and won a nice return. Most of the locals put small bets on him to win, and they all wished they had put down their entire cash supply.

The off track betting parlor actually ran out of cash paying off the bets, and they had to run to the local horse track to collect the bets, and go back to pay the regulars off. All 100% legal.

Gotta say I respect the call.
