Kentucky derby - wow

An 80-1 longshot Rich Strike wins the derby !!! Horse was only in the race because of another horse being scratched . The jockey it was his first time at the derby . What a great story .

My wife and I watched about two hours of TV coverage leading up to the race . Every talking head/expert had a theory on who was going to win and why .

When they called for " riders up " I said to my wife all the experts opinions mean nothing . The race will be won by whatever horse/jockey is fastest today ! All other discussion is just noise .

Is this horse a one hit wonder ? Only time will tell but if he is he sure picked the right race for it 😁. I love when an underdog over performs and pulls off a monumental win . I hope they gave him the good oats last night 😋

I liked how right after the race, when they were leading it around for the victory show, the horse was trying to pick a fight with the horse leading him around.

"Won the Derby...let's go at it!" :)

Yeah Rich Strike definitely had some attitude yesterday 😁. At least for a day his poop don't stink !

I have a sister who is a Farrier in Texas. She sent me this saying "Here's to the Farriers who did the 'wheel balancing' on today's Derby winner!".

Congratulations to Rich Strike , team Eric Reed, and farriers Chris and Christopher Beymer on winning the 2022 KY DERBY. Rich Strike was wearing the St Croix Concorde hinds and the Newly designed St Croix XLT fronts.
I’m blessed to work for a company, Mustad, USA, that supports product development focused on benefiting the horse and farrier.

I'll have to ask her if it's the same Mustad who make fish hooks....

That is very cool. Most people do not know what a pivotable role farrier's play across a bunch of horse efforts, not just horse racing.

When I was chasing the BB dream I did a number of months as a "swing groom" at the Race Horse training center in Aiken. It paid really well. One of the farriers and I became friends. He worked Aiken for the thoroughbreds as well as Camden, SC for Steeplechase and Race Horses. He also did Polo Ponies and high end event horses.

He was very good and had his own plane, a Cessna 170. He would pay me to fly with him to Camden, a few time to WPB and Atlanta. and help when needed. I am very good with horses since I've been Mongo the Stable Boy most of my life.

Keith was a great guy and let me spend a lot of time on the wheel.

^^^ The race was terrific. My wife and I watched it this morning - I knew who won but didn't tell her.

The story, the owner, trainer and jockey is fantastic at first blush. I hope it reamins so.

Not a big follower of horse racing. But a huge fan of the impossible being possible. That is just amazing, AMAZING!

At the 3/4 mark..Rich Strike was passing horses as though they were grazing.:)

And then he had enough energy left to pick a fight with another horse. :D

rfuerst911sc 05-08-2022 11:26 AM

I feel sorry for the first female horse that gets in the same stall as him !!! You want some of this beotch 😁

lindbhr 05-08-2022 11:29 AM

Can't wait to see how this horse does in the Belmont.

stevej37 05-08-2022 01:45 PM

The funniest part of the race was how quiet it became when Rich Strike blew past all the best odds horses to win.
Nobody could believe it.

greglepore 05-08-2022 01:49 PM

The early pace was smoking, and I think it played into Rich Strike's favor-he was way back running his own race when everyone at the front blew up-look how far Messier faded in the final 1/8.

^^^ and the inside track opened up at the exact right time for RS

Mustad for fishing is a Norwegian company

St. Croix Forge (horseshoes) is a Minnesota company

St. Croix fishing rods is a Wisconsin company

He doesn't have a very impressive record, but he has shown explosive speed. This was his maiden.

I love how the announcers were oblivious of the eventual winner - until he blew by the runner ups!
