Guys, why does my dog eat her poop sometimes?

I can’t figure her out. Has your dog ever eaten their poop? I’m glad I never let her lick my face.

Some breeds seem to love it like dachshunds. They say it can be a lack of nutrients so maybe a change in food or supliments can help. I heard pineapple kills their appetite for it.

Our Mastiff did.

During winter we called them poopcicles.

We had to block the laundry room where we kept the cats litter boxes to deny her toasted almond bars.

Our vet suggested pouring Tabasco on the poop, dog liked it even more.

She eventually outgrew it.

Its all a bunch of crap.

Nutrient deficiency not. What goes in does not get recycled.

Dog: Its smells familiar. I swear I have smelt that before? I just can't remember where? Lets taste it. Nonsense.

Ok it has a medical term. Coprophagia! Eating one's own turds. Yes its alarming and disturbing. Not as bad as eating ones young though.

They have a medication. Oddly its Mono sodium glutamate! Like you are going to sprinkle that on your dogs breakfast. It's supposed to make that turd taste foul and break pup of disturbing habit. Nonsense. It makes them sick, then they want to eat more poo to clear the stomach distress of said cure.

Let dog out in the morning the hunt is on. All turds are open game, the fresher the better. Targets the hot steaming ones. Infrared homing detection is switched on.

The females are the worst. What's with those *****es?

The song "Been caught Stealing" by Janes Addiction was about a dog with a Coprophagia problem.

The vet will tell you it’s actually considered normal — even common — for dogs to eat the droppings of other non-canine animals. But, it's relatively unusual for adult dogs to eat their own poop. In some circles it’s seen as a habit, while in others, it’s considered a disorder. Dear Vet, tell that to my dog!

No we are not going to the park until this habit is broken.

Interesting, I think most dogs grow out of it, just like human children stop putting everything in their mouths at some point and stop eating their own boogers.

Our Boston terrier does. We have to walk him on a leash in the back yard to poop so we can watch him.

My current Lab never has ... not once. Had one years ago that went through "her poop gobble stage" for a few years... if given the opportunity... they are dawgs. She quit over time...

Years ago our dachshund love to eat boogers and go into the trashcan for feminine hygiene products. Yuck.

Pretty common with hounds. Nothing to do with nutrition. Our Basset does it occasionally. Keeps us on our toes regarding clean-up.

I was told a long time ago that *****es are programmed to eat poop to keep their litter area clean.

My older pup will still nibble on droppings left in the yard.
He usually ignores squirrels and rabbits. He walks a few feet right by them not noticing.
Maybe he's got some herbivore pack/pact thing going on.

Predators will eat their prey or roll in it to conceal their own smell.

One of our dogs went through a phase of this, asked our Vet - he gave us some powder to put on his food. I asked- OK, what does it do? He said when they sniff or start to eat, they will be repulsed. I said "Doc, you ever hear the phrase - tastes like s**t? I mean it's already s**t - what could possibly make it taste worse?
