Navage, Big Thumbs Up!

Let me start by saying that I never had allergies as a kid or young adult.

But in my mid 50's I started taking BP medication and I don't know if the side effect of water retention had anything to do with it but I would have "post nasal drip" at night while sleeping that would drive me nuts in the morning. Sometimes an upset stomach from swallowing mucus at night and the morning ritual of snorting, spitting and hucking loogies to clear my sinuses in the AM.

Now, since i wasn't used to allergies I had a hard time getting onboard with allergy medication. Claritan, Allegra weren't working but Zyrtec would help a bit. But according to the Wife I was a bit "agitated" after taking it.

I had looked into the Navage nasal cleaner (douche if you will) but was put off by the need to constantly buy "salt pods". I'm not a big fan of the "Razor Blade Theory" in products and continued to use my Neti Pot.

Well, I finally broke down and bought one, and Holy Hanna, what a difference! No more disgusting noises coming from the bathroom as I try and clear my sinuses in the morning. I'm a confirmed believer!

Bottom line is, if you're looking for a Christmas gift for that stuffed up person in your life give Navage a try. If they don't like it they can put it in the attic next to their Epi-Lady and Laser Disc player.

There was a case awhile back where a woman instead of using the saline solution
used tap water and died from some kind of amoeba that entered her brain.

I had a horrible bout with allergies after I lost my spleen in 1975 and moved to LA. I'd wake up and immediately sneeze 4-6 times in a row. Tried lots of things- avoiding dairy and having my tonsils removed helped, but Pollinosan was like a miracle for me. I was able to taper off and still be cured. Herbal and homeopathic- you never know...

All in on this, thanks to my wife. I suffered with asthma and skin allergies when I was a kid, then I sort of 'grew out' of it. But my profession/ hobbies included being around a lot of caustic chemicals especially in the '80's. Even with proper masks, gloves etc, I was exposed to that all day, almost every day. I slowly started a backwards slide and my allergies returned except worse. I really suffered. Had 2 sinus surgeries to correct closed up passageways.

I was on antibiotics, steroids and other crap and those made me gain weight, my health in general started declining as well as my quality of life. My wife finally convinced me to use a simple neti-pot with salt. With a week of doing that every morning I began to feel better, no yellow discharge, and my sinus swelling subsided over time. Things are back to normal, rarely having any cold, sinus or related sickness. The one thing I do is put the distilled water in the microwave to warm it. That opens me up first thing, makes the experience much better. It's a part of my morning routine. I highly recommend it.

^^^^^ I have one of those things I use occasionally. I have post nasal drip & have had for a long time. Maybe I should try using it on a daily basis. I can't seem to find a med that actually works.

Yes I have one of those bottle flushes. If you follow the directions such as boil the water, let it cool down, poor into the plastic bottle and add the salt packet and shake. It is great in winter here when the house is so dry and the sinuses feel cleared.

Even the Neti Pot became a hassle. Trying to mix the salt, leaning over the sink while water drained out the other nostril, having to go for seconds and thirds, etc.

Now I just fill with warm water, put in a saline capsule and it shoots it in one nostril and sucks it out of the other. Detach the bottom and pour out the waste and rinse. Quick and easy. And I can tell the difference between the Navage and the Neti Pot, no comparison.

^^^^^ I read some articles both pro and con, that's why I was kind of on the fence about purchasing one. But for me, convenience is the main benefit, I sometimes need to be on the road to get to a studio or location by 3 AM so whatever gets me out the door faster is a big help.

As far as some of the negative stuff mentioned in the article, some people are just too damn hard to please. That's why they make adult vitamins and medication in "Gummi" form these days, folks are just getting soft.

Make sure you use distilled water, and not tap. There have been rare instances where the tap water caused bad infections around the brain...

I've been using one for over two years. I suffer from environmental allergies all year around. I've used Flonase and Nasacort sprays that do help alleviate the sinus pressure BUT I also have ear pressure which neither helps alleviate. I've also used cetirizine (zyrtec) combined with the sprays but the ear pressure doesn't go away. The sinus rinse helps alleviate the ear pressure for me and works faster than any of the sprays or pills for my sinuses and it seems to last longer.

I use filtered tap water that I boil in the microwave, let cool, then pour in. A "trick" I learned for cleaning is to open the lid, pull out the saline pod, press the dimple on top back up, fill the reservoir with warm water, put the used salt pod back in, close the lid, and flush the system with warm water. You can also do this if you want to mix your own saline solution before or after boiling the water if you're out of salt pods or don't want to spend the money on them.

There are two tabs inside the salt pod holder that need to close for the button to unlock and activate the pump. The one on the lid istelf is the one that presses the small bump on the salt pod down. This is why once you open the lid and close again, the pump won't work. Pressing this dimple back up allows that button to be depressed again which allows the pump to operate again.

Pics below of the salt pod before and after.

Craigster - any updates, pros/cons, etc.?

I never had sinus issues until about five years ago. There are days now with a high pollen/***** in the air count where I am miserable.

Still recommend?

It has worked out great. It has turned from a daily treatment for around 2 weeks into only needing to do it 2-3 times a week.

I microwave 4 cups of distilled water for 45 seconds, flush once, refill and flip the nose thing-a-ma-bob around and flush the other direction. The Wife says I don't snore as much either which is a win-win!
