RV luan plywood floor - how to seal ?
Last week I installed a luan plywood floor over the existing plywood floor in a truck camper. I now want to seal/protect the luan . I think I want to prime then paint and then install a linoleum floor as the final finish.
I also have two sections of plywood that make up the part of the camper that makes up the base for the seating area and the kitchen cabinet base cabinets. I applied several coats of marine varnish on those areas last year . I now want to paint those areas . Will a scuff sanding be sufficient before painting ? Any recommendations on what type of paint ? |

If I scuff sand the areas that are varnished, would Kilz primer be good for the bare luan and the varnish areas ?

Pre fit your vinyl floor and full spread (sixteenth inch notch trowel) with pressure sensitive floor adhesive. Let the adhesive sit for a half hour before installing your flooring. That adhesive will protect better than paint. Why not use the vinyl flooring for the other areas as well? Paint sucks as a floor covering. Even porch paint doesn't hold up well

Greg Park I don't want to glue down the sheet vinyl. Hence my desire to prime/paint and then loose lay the vinyl . I would love to cover the other areas with vinyl , however there are large bolt heads from the campers lift system in the way . No way to countersink them so the vinyl wouldn't lay flat . But I appreciate your feedback .

You could cut around the bolt heads and glue on toilet bolt caps painted to match. I've done flooring in quite a few RVs and boats. I found that glued down flooring works best. I tried free floating but ended up gluing it down. Floating floors work best in larger rooms but give it a shot, you can always glue it down later if it moves around too much. I did one floating floor in an RV that worked great until the thing traveled at speed on the highway. I carefully cut around the table post and air lifted the flooring! I guess some of those things aren't built that tight ha ha
