Cali DMV
I paid my Tacomas registration $163 the first week in April. I called today to ask them the where abouts of my tags. Their response was. Should get them in two weeks. That’s eight weeks. I could get pulled over or even a ticket when parked. One would think that with a 87 billion surplus they could hire people to process this stuff in a timely manner. Rant over!

I just did my Tacoma as well. Same $163 I think. Hopefully I get yours!
I’m early anyways. Not due until July. I have time. But I agree, it’s been awhile. Usually it’s fast.

And that's where my AAA membership pays off every year.
Last time I had to pay for tags it was less than 10 minutes to walk in, pay and walk out with tags in hand.

Think my bill here in Florida was $150 for 3 cars, one pickup, and a motorized canoe. Walked into my small town city hall, said hello to the nice ladies, paid, and walked out w/ stickers in 15 minutes.

Last time I got mine at the DMV kiosk at the supermarket (looks like a vending machine). Took all of 2 minutes.

On another note I was following up on the speeding ticket I got in January. 3 months later it still wasn't in their online system.
I went to the courthouse and they said the officer has one year to file the ticket. Five months later it still isn't in the system. I'm starting to think he was just as disgusted as I was for writing me up for 70 mph on a 65 mph interstate freeway and decided "screw it".

We are able to pay for two year tags in Florida. Saves a bit of time and a bit of money.

I was listening to NPR today and they ( California Government) have a boat load of money. The Gov wants to give back $400 per registered vehicle up to two vehicles per household. That’s a pittance. They should roll back the Cali gas tax. Oh.. it’s going up more this July. |

I just pay 21 bucks and do it online. A new sticker shows up in the mail within a week. The same price for both the El Camino or my 911. I never have to leave the house.

Yep, I do 99% of my DMV stuff at AAA. It would be 100% but once in a while there is something that needs a DMV office. Going to AAA is so easy and painless that I still can’t believe it after decades.

I am having a hard time grasping this 87 billion dollar surplus. 364 days a year all we hear is the state is losing money.

I've got a fleet of approx F250's and 6 medium duty flatbed/dump trucks. It takes a LOT of detail work to keep them all properly registered and insured. Our insurance broker sends the insurance info to the DMV electronically, and we pay the tags immediately upon receipt of their notice.
That said, the number of times we don't receive or tags from the CA DMV is pathetic. No explanations ever given, and if we lose track of things on a few occasions our drivers have even been ticketed, even though the DMV had payment and registration long before the due date. Pathetic.

I just don’t understand why it takes so long. They want you to pay by mail or electronically but then take their sweet time getting the tags out. In this day and age it should be streamlined!

They cash the check immediately. Seems to take at least 2 months to get the tags.

California unemployment alone is $20 billion in debt. The pension funds are hundreds of billions in debt. The Cal govt likes to tout its “budget surplus” but that’s an almost meaningless number. Just create a huge, bloated, underfunded yearly “budget” and ignore all the debt. Then make it like it’s a big deal when the entire budget isn’t spent (this time, largely because of so much “free” fed money received.” California is one of the most indebted states in the country per capita, only NY, NJ, Mass and Illinois are worse. California’s combined federal, state and local debt is a staggering $1 TRILLION. But yea, send out $400 to everyone 3 months before an election, haha. ![]() |

It might not be the DMV holding it up, maybe it's USPS. I've lived in CA all my life, have multiple cars, I've gotten mine on time. If you call DMV, chose the call back option, rather than waiting. For registration AAA helps, I have a habit of putting it off. For other DMV issues make an appointment online. If you go to DMV and you're having issues, request a supervisor. Agencies run plates, so if registration is paid, you should be fine. Some letters are automatically generated.
