Phone goes straight to voicemail
verizon, phone calls go straight to VM, no ring, happened sporadically at first, now more often
the monkey at customer service spent an hour and a half of my time with no help we have some rocket surgeons around here, WTF is up with the phone? He had me turn off call forwarding, which I never turned on, and it worked once

You don't say if you're using an iPhone, but I assume most phones these days have similar features.
I'm sure this was checked, but I assume that you do NOT have DND (do not disturb) on. Does the phone ring for certain callers but not others? How about the ring tone, if you go to settings and sounds and check the main ring tone, do you hear what you expect (maybe some people have one ring tone and that rings, but the default is something else? How about the little switch on the side (maybe only iPhone)?

Dude, it is a ghetto ass, semi dumb flip phone, I don't think it even has DND. I can download music or podcasts onto it, look at the internet
Last time I had this problem, somehow it had gotten flipped to airplane mode, and everything was switched to jive. All I could get out of it was "Cut me some slack, Jack! Chump don' want no help, chump don't GET da help!" and it would quit. Seriously though, it turned off the ringer in airplane mode, it is not that. Touch screens are no bueno with my fingers for some reason.

Verify that your phone is still compatible with the Verizon network (will handle 4G or better). My son just had this happen to him and discovered that his phone was at best 3G compatible. Verizon has been phasing out 3G.

My first thought with this bit of info is that there's a connectivity issue through the hinge so that sometimes the signal for the ring doesn't get from the electronics over to the speaker. But if that's the case, then I'd expect you to have audio issues at other times. but maybe it's only an issue when the hinge is in the closed position. To test that, you could leave the phone open on a table and call it a half a dozen times. And leave it closed and call it half a dozen times. Does the orientation of the phone (open or closed) make a difference?

And, apparently, then either get a "pen" or possibly wear a pair of gloves that have pads on the index and middle fingers and thumbs. Yeah, lots of gloves these days have spots on 3 fingers that will work a phone.

BTW, Verizon can't unfk my call fwding either. :-/ Pretty sure it's a govt owned business. - it may not work well, but at least it's the most expensive.

Yeah, friend of mine saw it and said, "what is up with the burner phone?"
Okay, they fixed it, no idea what was done or what was wrong.
