Partner? Life partner? SO? BF/GF? What do you call her/him?
My "girlfriend" and I have been together for 5 years or so. We talk of retirement together. People seem to stumble when they go to introduce us to other people. We're not married, but BF/GF seems too casual. Her sister once introduced me as "partner," but that felt awkward and business-like.
What do you call the person who you're not married to, but are in a long term, committed relationship with?

Just "my friend" and that is enough.
Whenever I mention my business partner, I always use the term business partner, to make sure everyone knows we have a business relationship. Yea, we are friends as well, but I would feel totally weird calling hm "my partner" as that implies a romantic relationship and is a term often used now.

Kidding, of course.
Interesting question. I frankly don't think there is a right or wrong answer.

Oh god, I call my business partner in the rentals "my partner " all the time, and I get weird looks . He is kind of light in his loafers, and I have been off the rails myself for 25 years now, so I think it may lend people to think we are batting for the same team .
I have been with my wife for 25 years or better, but only been married 7 now . I agree, it's akward and I always stumbled when introducing her . I used to address her as my gf, but moved over to calling her my better half. It slipped off the tongue easier .

Just use her name. I don't think the status of your relationship needs to be announced at a first meeting. People will figure it out or ask someone about it. So unless your relationship status is something she wants you to announce during introductions, I would just introduce her by name. There should be enough social cues to make it obvious. If not, just plant one on her right after the intro.

Recently at Mass we prayed for some man that died. They said his name and added "long time companion of (name of some woman I don't know) ...".
It was pretty obtuse in format. Usually it is: Ralph Smith, husband of Betty Smith. Strange as it was, I sort of like 'companion' Partner sounds like you are trying to be European, not that there's anything wrong with that

Same story here. 9 years and out. When she was here I sometimes said, ol' lady.

Whats wrong with Wife if you are in a committed relationship?
Back in the day it really did not require much more than a public affirmation by the couple. It only got messy when the State and Religion stuck their hands into peoples business.
