Car insurance cost

I just got a quote from Progressive for a 2007 BMW 328i, $560 for the year. Basic insurance, no theft or collision or anything like that.

Is that good? Seems reasonable.

Probably a good deal depending on what other cars you have on the policy, etc. My truck costs about half that, but it is a extra vehicle, not worth a lot. I do have very high medical coverage on my policies though... and a 22 year old daughter and 18 year old son on the policies... so my monthly bill is quite high.

Sounds high for around here, but we are not Boston.

My wife's 2017 Macan with full coverage is just at $800. My 1985 911 with agreed value of 65K is just $440 per year. I can drive it up to 7,499 miles in a year.

The El Camino is just over $250 and it has full coverage as well. All have $1,000 deductible. All have high limits of coverage.

Seems cheap.

I sell commercial insurance for a living. Commercial autos in Oregon are $1300 - $2500 annual.

I hear Las Vegas is around $5000.

I would expect Boston to be much more than what you show. Take it!

My 2012 F350 with full coverage is that every 6 months with Allstate, so I'd say that is not bad for just liability.

We're paying $595 every six months for full coverage on the 2020 T-350 van and 2021 Model Y through Costco Connect. That's PLPD, uninsured motorist bodily injury & property damage, collision, comprehensive & rental. I periodically check for coverage through other carriers, but they're usually twice the premium we pay.

My DD (2012 Subaru) is $1140 per year for minimum liability with a low mileage discount, good driver discount, multiple car discount, auto and home discount, garaged discount, etc. Because I'm in Michigan they require 'personal injury protection' insurance so $830 of that goes to the state.

It was $296 per year in Iowa before we moved here.

Thanks for the confirmation. It seemed reasonable but full coverage on the Cayenne is $1100 so wasn't really sure. Nice to have a point free driving record for many years now. Not always the case.

My understanding is they passed this legislation in the 70's. It's so if you're disabled in an accident the state pays your bills instead of the insurance companies. Not sure how much the insurance companies paid to get that bill passed but it has benefitted the state (and the insurance companies) greatly. Whitmer actually just gave us a $400 per car check because of excessive money in the coffer (over $5B just sitting there before the checks, $2B after). She also reduced the amount we pay if we have valid health insurance to cover ourselves in case of an accident. I don't have that which is why I pay so much in PIP coverage. And I pay that PIP coverage on every car I insure. So I pay 5 times what my neighbor does who has one car. /rant.

Car insurance went way up when I went from Texas to California. Malpractice insurance went way down, because of tort reform. Trial attorneys are working on getting rid of the tort reform deal.

I've read that according to 2022 rate data, the average cost of car insurance is $1,655 per year for full coverage. As for me, it's too expensive. I've contacted carshield customer service at https://carshield.pissedconsumer.com/customer-service.html, and they indicated the price of about $800 for my 2006 Peugeot 307. Is it a good price?

Shaun,

Not sure if this is a good comparison but I'm 30 minutes north of Boston, drive a 2007 Toyota FJ, insured through Farmers. The policy carries theft and collision with no deductible, and a bumped up bodily injury for $772/year

thanks Lou, that is good to know. I will check out Farmers and compare. And if similar, for $200/year, I'll take comprehensive.

For as long as I've been driving premiums usually went down as the vehicle got older, one of the advantages of driving an older car.

For the first time my premium has gone up. I've been with State Farm for 15 years or so and never had a claim (other than the occasional windshield). Car is a 2019 VW Golf Alltrack. I have every discount they offer.

Have others experienced this recently? When I called and inquired they said it's partially because people are going back to work, back on the road.

My new Rav with driver assistance costs about as much to insure as my beater 08 Taurus X. I don’t know why but I’m going to find out! And my 20 year old son with no points, no accidents costs more to insure than my 22 year old daughter with a speeding ticket and an at fault accident. Again, gonna find out why.
