WTF is wrong with people, II

Trying to buy cars has become like receiving scam emails for something you are selling on CL.

Most recent example, excellent 1991 CRX Si. Good pics, no description whatsoever. Getting information about the car is like pulling teeth. Have asked 3 times about the title. No answer. 5 other questions half answered.

This is the 4th car I've experienced stuff like this. Last one I couldn't get the address after 3 requests to see it. WTF?

matthewb0051 06-16-2022 05:43 AM

A couple of years ago before we moved, I was looking for a Range Rover. This guy in DC area had one advertised for MONTHS online. I contacted him and asked to see it. He informed me that it wasn't ready for sale and that he wouldn't be able to show it for a few months more.

I don't remember the platform, but I contacted Autotrader or whatever it was and complained. Either it is for sale or not. They balked at first but then the next day the ad was off.

Luckily I found another even better model and have been happy since.

LWJ 06-16-2022 05:47 AM

I just went to see an old Dirtbike. Seller was adamant that it “only needed a spark plug” to be perfect. It was a basket case. Dumbest seller I have ever come across. But, at least they responded.

As to your question? Not sure why people place ads and can’t follow through. I have had quite a few that don’t answer questions or don’t read my questions.

masraum 06-16-2022 05:52 AM

The Internet has enabled us all to interact with all of the idiots and scammers out there.

Exactly. Last night my college son tells us he found a 2021 Honda Pilot for around $4,000.

Sure thing. Of course I don't know anything so when I told him that wasn't true or a scam he scoffed at my comments.

last car acquired in the current market

I told them I have cash you have a car
drive your car to my house where my tools ramps jacks gauges ect are
if I like your car after a brief inspection you get cash

sorry I do not travel or jump thru any hoops
if you can't promptly come to show your car
there are others who want to sell their car

stomachmonkey 06-16-2022 06:42 AM

I've got a line on a super cherry Unimog.

fintstone 06-16-2022 06:51 AM

That is too bad. I bought my last 3 cars on the internet...and did pretty well. One was a seller here on PP.

cabmandone 06-16-2022 06:53 AM

I've found this to be a strange phenomenon. People list something on the internet but when you contact them to see it they aren't willing to share their address so you can go look at it. If you're too scared of the weirdos to send someone your address, why the hell are you listing something on the internet?

Shaun,
Try asking if they would be willing to meet you somewhere public. As I mentioned, some folks want to sell, they just don't want people coming to their house to buy. If you get too "pushy" about their address, it might scare them. I tend to send my phone number, worst thing they can do is sell it to someone else and I change numbers, and give them the opportunity to call me.

Don't take this the wrong way.... but I would have laughed at you. There are LOADS of buyers out there. The seller likely didn't need to jump through the hoop of brining the car to you.

Right, I've never delivered a car to someone. I've always done one of two things, meet someplace, usually a parking lot or have them come to my place.
"Bring your car to me."
"Thank you, but 'no.'"
And based on what I've heard, these days it's an insane sellers market, so that's far less likely to occur.

"I have cash" was my favorite line from prospective buyers when I was selling my 911. I said "yeah so does everyone else". I told one guy "the problem is, your cash is about $10K too light" I don't think he saw the humor in that but I really didn't care.

LOL. Right. Versus what, personal check? Credit Card? Bartering for favors?

cabmandone 06-16-2022 08:01 AM

A carton of Lucky Strikes and a case of Blatz.

911 Rod 06-16-2022 08:26 AM

People are becoming lazy.
Because so few are mechanically inclined, they think any POS is okay!

fastfredracing 06-16-2022 08:31 AM

Its because he is getting bombarded by 30 messages every hour on the hour, and each message has 5 questions, wants more pictures, and inquiring about trades, payment plans, will you deliver and a whole bunch of other nonsense
Its over whelming selling something.
If I am looking to by , I always just try to arrange a meet, and let them know I am serious with money in hand .
I had to pound the guy I bought my tow truck from for a week before he agreed to let me show up and hand him his asking price .

908/930 06-16-2022 08:47 AM

What I find is that people have no idea how to take pictures of the item they are selling, looking at motorcycles some had stupid close up's of the exhaust or tank but no pic's of entire side, one had some wierd photoshop thing where it was fuzzy, it's not a art contest.

cabmandone 06-16-2022 08:51 AM

TMI Fred.... TMI :D

look 171 06-16-2022 08:58 AM

I don't buy anything used much anymore or sell anything for that matter. I will be foook when it come time to sell my 911s.

Who said that? People are too lazy and are too use to having siht delivered to them and that expectation is the same when they are dealing with YOU. I understand about the pictures, that goes for both parties. Poor pics and sometimes the buyer demands too much. I don't remember it being like this when it was a only ads in the local paper or for us, the Recycler.

I sold 2 very decent cars over the last year and neither one flew off the shelf. They basically ended up going for pre-pandemic prices. Maybe people just aren't bothering to look for private party cars anymore?

Similarly, it almost seems like people have stopped looking for new cars at dealers. I was helping a friend find a Corolla the other day and it was like $2000 cheaper to buy a new one than a 20k mile example from the used-only dealers. The Toyota dealer had dozens of new Corollas on the lot.

When I was a kid, there were tons and tons of cars sold via the classifieds in the newpaper. For years, that's how I bought cars. I've noticed the last several times that I bought cars that there seemed to be fewer and fewer privately sold vehicles, and a lot of the ones listed were horribly misrepresented and or ridiculously priced.

I can only assume that most cars either go to the crusher or a car dealership.

911_Dude 06-16-2022 05:02 PM

Ive sold a bunch of vehicles on Craigslist and FB Marketplace. I always post a ton of pics, provide accurate descriptions, and answer questions when asked. Usually results in a quick sale. Ive had a lot of folks say the car looks better than they expected.

But yeah, lots of idiots out there. I usually dont even reply to those that start with "whats your best price?". Or maybe Ill reply with "Whats the highest you will pay?".

That's exactly what I do. I had a prospective customer call asking about a machine. His first question was "what's your bottom dollar?". My response was "What's the most you're willing to spend?" The guy says "I don't like that question" I said "Interesting! I didn't like yours either!"

syncroid 06-16-2022 05:52 PM

Sorry Shaun

#1 Craigslist consists of mostly scammers or flakes!
I have found great deals there. I have also been completely frustrated with that platform.
#2 Whenever I post something on Flakelist, I never EVER give my email. It is call or text only. Also cash only.

Sorry. I know this is not about Craigslist, but this hit a hot button for me.

When you post a price and get the "whats you best price?", respond with a price that is $500 MORE than what you originally posted. When they complain that the "best price" is higher, tell them "that is what is best for me, make me an offer of what were you thinking to spend?" They will either lol and dialog or get offended and not bother you anymore.

Here in the Atlanta area in the past week or so two " father's " shot and killed their wife/girlfriend/baby mama and child . You really have to be disturbed mentally to murder your child ☹️ . Same for the mother of the child .

It's apparent some folks have zero conflict resolution skills and must rely on violence as a means to an end . Very sad , I guess minimal grey matter between their ears .

I don't "get it" but I understand how it could happen when someone takes out their "loved ones" and then takes out themselves. In that situation, they had a major issue going on inside, and the thought processes and actions are often irrational and incomprehesible to folks that aren't suicidal. I've never had that sort of depression or feelings, so I don't understand, but I understand that if a person is in that kind of place, it's pretty alien.

What I don't get is when folks just take out their "loved ones." That seems like an extra, extra weird place and thing to do.

But then I'll never understand certain folks and their actions, and will do my best to avoid them.

Lack of culture and a father figure, is way more likely.........

Stupid is often a contributing factor, of course.

This pretty much answers the OP's question, and accounts for many of the problems in modern society. Unfortunately, the pool of people with minimal intelligence just seems to be growing larger all the time :(

Edit: had to fix it. Been too long since I took Spanish.

masraum 06-17-2022 05:33 PM

Seems like the perfect opportunity to open with "que onda?" A cook at one of the bars where I tended bar used to say that. I always responded with "que toyota, que chevrolet."

I hear the best negotiating tactic that always gets positive results and doesn't piss people off is "what's the least that you'll take?"

aigel 06-17-2022 06:14 PM

Usually you can tell from the ad if the seller has half a brain. I haven't bought any cars in a long time, but I do only contact folks that have half a decent ad with reasonable spelling.

When I sell, I always price is slightly above market, have plenty of pictures, a decent description and I always sell things fast, there are plenty people out there like me who appreciate having a reasonable person sell something.

The biggest pay back is cleaning things up. I spend half a day getting things ready and it is worth hundreds if not thousands of dollars in a car sale.

I know as a seller it always makes me more motivated!

fastfredracing 06-17-2022 07:29 PM

Man that looks sweet. Keep us posted . I always had CRX si cars as my dailys back in my youth . I drove across the country solo in one .

Shaun @ Tru6 06-18-2022 03:41 AM

All the pics make it seem like it has half the mileage it does Fred, 174K. That said, distance is a car's best friend so who knows what it will look like in person. Next weekend I'll go see it if it's still available.
