2 killed in highway rally in CO in Porsche 911 turbo

https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a40322653/porsche-911-turbo-crash-crown-rally/

Quote:
Two people were killed when their Porsche 911 Turbo left the roadway at over 140 mph before jumping a fence and rolling several times on Thursday, police said.

The incident occurred on Highway 141, a two-lane roadway located just outside of Norwood, a small town in the southwest corner of Colorado, according to the San Miguel County Sheriff's Office. The occupants, a 43-year-old and 38-year-old from Illinois, were participating in the 2022 Crown Rally. Their names have not been released.

"In one of the most horrific traffic accidents responding Deputies have ever seen, two men were killed when their vehicle left the roadway traveling in excess of 140 mph, jumping a fence, rolling several times, and ejecting the driver," a statement published by the Sheriff's department published to Twitter said.

The five-day, four-night rally began on Wednesday. It was planned to involve a drive from Denver to Las Vegas, with stops in Scottsdale, Santa Fe, and Beaver Creek. Crown Rally organizers published the following statement on its Facebook page:

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of two members of our rally family who passed away yesterday in a single car incident. Larry and Mike have touched so many lives in and outside of the car community, and we will miss them dearly. Our sincere condolences go out to their families and friends."

A post by the Battle Royal Facebook group shows the car in Denver before the incident.

“I am terribly sorry these two men were killed in what was a preventable incident,” San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters said. “And I don’t appreciate what amounts to reckless and intentional disregard for the people of our county. They could have killed an innocent motorist. Crown Rally needs to re-think what they’re doing out on the roads.”

I have people in SW Colo.....Many complaints of them driving like idiots before this short Wheel based Turbo crash......Examples included passing on blind curves.

I'm not going to say "you should never speed" because that would be hypocritical, but there are lots of folks that don't understand minimizing risk or driving like a moron. There are so many videos on youtube of jackasses racing through traffic on freeways and passing cars not only in illegal spots, but also REALLY stupid spots.

RIP to the two folks that died.

I saw nothing to indicate the cause of the crash. The assumption that going fast did so might well be inaccurate. I personally hauled my family all over Europe at speeds well over 100 mph (in probably a much lesser car) for years without killing them or anyone else. The same crash at 90, 70 or even a lower speed might have been fatal as well.

May they rest in peace.

4,000 pixel wide images. I need a higher resolution laptop and a magnifying glass for normal images.

Ouch!!

I guess quite a few drivers complained they were driving recklessly darting in and out of traffic.

Picture of the 911 Turbo that morning, taken in Denver

Sorry for the ones they left behind, etc.
It does look like a pretty remote, flat, and probably straight section of highway. I do wonder what factor (besides the obvious one) caused the crash.

Sad to see. 140 is not all that fast, but on the wrong country road made to go 40mph (as most CO western slope roads are), things get dicey real quick.

Yes, the frost heaves and road dips can be unpleasant at 80mph on two lane roads here. At 140mph? No way is that going to go on for long without dire consequences involved.

I had not thought of that.

I could not find HWY 141 out of Norwood, only HWY 145.

If you want to go 100 or 200 mph get a car designed to survive a 200 mph crash.
