Great MTBing.
Last time I road MTB there was about 20+ years ago. At the time, I thought I was pretty badass on a MTB. Not there though. Me girly man. Trails labelled as intermediate seemed more like advanced trails. Lots of wet roots and such. A lot has changed since then, and for the better, specially with the chair lifts. Take a run on the beginner's MTB downhill trails first to get a feel for what you are getting into, then try intermediate/expert as needed. There's some serious downhill stuff there now. Way out of my league. Same for the cross country. Last time I was up there in summer was five years ago. There weren't a lot of restaurants open. The ones that were open closed early. Check what's available food wise and have a plan. If you are driving, I'd recommend taking a some food as not to completely depend on the places up there. It seems like it would be a little mecca, but in the summer, was a bit sparse. I'm probably riding the greenbrier river trail again this july 4th weekend. I will probably throw in a loop of the scenic highway rt 150 close by. It's more road/gravel weekend. Not mtb. Try out CASS scenic railroad if bored/looking for something different. Marlington has an ok bar, but probably not worth the drive. Last time I was riding greebrier river trail, I stayed in marlington. All the people at the bar were coming in from out of town to pick up their friends who had broken themselves MTBing at snowshoe (marlington has the hospital) ![]() Last edited by LEAKYSEALS951; 06-20-2022 at 04:37 AM.. |

Probably a time crunch but something to think about next trip.

^Yeah, Fayetteville WV has some amazing outdoor stuff. If there's a way to throw that into the loop, totally worth it. It's got some cool restaurants/bars too.

We did an extended family vacation there a few years back when the kids were small. The Green Bank Radio Telescope Observatory is nearby as well as the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. Snowshoe also had a sporting clays course if you are interested in that sort of thing. We cooked most of our meals, but did do a date night (with built-in babysitters!) there at the resort and I remember it being acceptable.

The bridge walk is cool, but bridge day in October is a major scene, base and bungee jumping off of the bridge.

I could probably still manage the New...no way I'm getting back on the Gauley ![]() I need to look into the area a bit more - we skied there a few times with the kids but we have never been there in any other season. The sporting clays sounds like fun. Great thread!

I really wish we had done more of the one day trips when I was a white water rafting guide...The Stanislaus could have been done the exact same way as the New, same with any number of Cali rivers we had to work to make a two day trip. Perhaps they do it now as well. The rum from Coloma to Folsom Lake on the South Fork of the American River is a perfect one day trip. Enjoy

Ace is evidently a pretty big place with a lot to do within itself. When I'd stay close by, the other camp grounds would recommend I go over to ace to hang out. I'd ride down from ACE down to thurmond and ride the trails along the river.
Fun place. I haven't rafted the new since 1995. Great times. |
