Hey Marines, how's Lejuene pronounced?

Lived in NC most of my life, and "down east" for a spell too, and have driven through J-ville on several occasions. Saw a doc on TV about the base....I've always heard it pronounced as LeJUNE (like the month), but in the doc it was more like LeZURN (rhyming with "urn"). How do you guys who served pronounce it? The latter is correct (according to my search), but I've just never heard it pronounced that way in more than 50 years ....did I just learn something new?

I figure "my" pronunciation may just be a "southern THANG"

You got the "e" & "u" switch around... It's Camp Lejeune

Its French as in "The Young one"

Go to Pronounce Names - Dictionary of Name Pronunciation, How to pronounce names, How to say a name, Name pronunciation, Name pronunciations, How to pronounce a name and type "jeune" only.

Me neither Nick...not until the documentary. Here's what I copied form Wiki (that I had looked up earlier):

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune [1] (/ləˈdʒɜrn/ lə-JURN[2])

Have no idea where they get the "r" from...

ps: Goes without saying, but I will...thanks to you guys who served

I am not a marine but I understand where you are coming from. I used to work with a guy whose last name was Devalois and he was originally from the US. He called himself Devaloy. But the Frenchman I was with told him he was mispronouncing his own name and should be pronounced Devalwah! We laughed and thought it was a big joke. There is a tendency to pronounce French names in the US in the southern twang as mentioned above. I don't get bent out of shape over this stuff but some folks just don't know their heritage or would prefer to blend in. Vive la difference!

southern twang? you're just not going far enough south. down here you use a cajun accent to pronounce names like that. I'd love to hear you guys read a South Louisiana phone book with all the french/cajun names

The real question is would you pronounce it the way you want to or the way he pronounced his own name?

There is a guy who plays hockey who's name is Roy. He wants everyone to call him Wah. I'm of the opinion if you want to call it something else then change it to how it should be spelt. Lejune
