Mounting Advice
Yes it’s about the TV box
Tackling pulley tomorrow. Need to get the TV mount in place today. I’ve got a TV mount that uses 3 lag bolts and holds 90 lbs. Tv is 30 lbs plus the mount call it 35 lbs all in. The brick in our homes is more facade than structural. Between the brick and house sheathing there is a small air gap, maybe 1/4 in. So, do i use the shorter silver lag bolts or the slightly too long black ones? The mount plate and plywood on back of box are going to take up 3/16” plus a washer call it 1/4 in. If i land the holes in one of the cavities i don’t have the full benefit of the silver lag do I? And does it even matter. Or as i’m drilling if i don’t hit a cavity use the silver and if i do use the black. Or am I overthinking the whole thing and some crazy glue and duct tape will git er dun ![]()

I’d probably go with the longer lag screw in galvanized or stainless steel in a mortar joint. If it’s a little long, it goes into a stud or air pocket. Maybe even OSB if your house is sheathed with it.
I think once you start drilling, you will find that there is mortar inside the openings and the backside has a lot of mortar as well, especially at the joints. FYI, I never use those plastic inserts. They always seem to fail. |

Ahh. I could picture the blue screw, but could not think of the name tapcon. Yes, that’s what I would use.

I've used Tapcons a lot under strenuous conditions like air hose reel mounted on a cinder block wall. Lot of pulling down. Haven't failed in 3 years of use.

I generally use Tapcons for most stuff so off to Lowes to pick up large enough ones as I don't have that size on hand.
The box itself is mounted with Tapcons.

You didn't mention if the "block" in the top pick is what you're actually screwing the bolt into.
In the other thread it looks like "stucco brick", not "block" like a cinder block, which is structural. What I'd do is look for a place to screw wood blocking into the wall studs and use that blocking as the anchor. But do what makes you happy. |

If you are really serious about making that a climbing gym, then I suggest pre-drilling a hole and fill with structural epoxy. Just the cheap ones at home depot that mix itself as it comes out of the tube. Simpson makes them. Once in, it ain't coming but that only works if the cells are filled with concrete.
Me, a 3/8" sleeve anchor would be my choice if cells are filled. |

Well things changed.
I ditched the articulated mount because one of the things I hate about them is they tend to sag. The VESA mount on this specific TV is below center of gravity so it ended up sagging enough at the top of TV where it got too close to the inside of the door for my comfort. And moving the TV around was cumbersome, again, due to the size ant elevation. Popped into Walmart and grabbed a standard flush mount. It spreads the load way better and I can add another 10 anchors "just in case" Happy to nearly be done with this project, it's been a death by 1,000 cuts experience. Sort the pulley system tomorrow and I'm done.

Congrats on an almost complete, successful project.
