What's your opinion of recent F150s?

Thinking of trading trucks. Considering a F150.

2015 - Aluminum Body. Here in the rust belt, this intrigues me. Staring at a hole slowly growing over the rear wheel arch of the existing truck.
2016 - Carplay and Android Auto. For an old guy, easier to see the 8" screen than a phone screen when I'm trying to find my way around an unfamiliar area.
2017 - Is this the year Ford started sending some fuel down the intake again to help with carbon buildup on the back of the intake valves?
2018 - 10 speed transmission. Improvement over the 6 speed, or not worth it?

That might be as new as I want to go, unless you can point out a feature I can't live without. I'm working from home now, and will likely retire in a year or two. I'll drive it less than 5000 miles a year, current truck is even less than that. I have no issues buying a 100,000 mile truck, unless you're going to tell me there's big maintenance looming before 150,000. Anyone have a high mileage eco-boost?

Gorgeous comfortable trucks… but will they go the distance?

Just reading this months C&D mag.
If you buy the F-150 Lightning....you can provide power to your home for three days in an outage.
Might cost an additional $4K for the hook-up.

I wonder how the aluminum body holds up to road salt ? Aluminum corrosion may not be better than galvanized steel rust . And harder to repair .

I have a 2016 3.5 Ecoboost. Easy to work on (oil, plugs, gen maintenance) and goes like snot. 97k miles and normal maintenance and changing the plugs and coil packs was the priciest job ($500 and easy) that I have done.

If you do end up getting one, if the original shocks and struts, change out to Bilsteins.

Wife loves the ride and the roominess. Satisfied owner here.

I have an older 2014 Lariet F150 with the 5.0, 2 Wheel Dr. 6 speed and 160k on the clock. 8” touchscreen with navigation. Only two problems I’ve had in my ownership since new is the Advanced Trac (steering) needed work at about 15k and the water pump was replaced at 100K. I replaced the spark plugs at 100k.

I would imagine newer trucks have similar experience.

That's a good question. I would figure around here, if there was a problem, it would start showing up by now. I'm more worried about everything that is still steel underneath. Seems like the newer a vehicle is, the less corrosion protection there is under it, or maybe it just seems that way because the body lasts longer. I had a 2000 F150, the rear brake lines rusted out. One blew while towing a trailer, that was a code brown moment. I also thought it had a pinion seal leak, replaced the seal, refilled the diff, noticed a wet spot on the back of the pumpkin. Wiped it off, a few minutes later it was wet again. The diff cover had rusted through.

Maybe I should bring a creeper along when I go to look at trucks.

rented one to tow a 5k lbs boat about 7k on the hitch
was 2019 6t with the auto multi speed
not quite big enuff to sleep in the back seat
only tryed to kill me once when I changed lanes tooo quick
had lots of power drank lots of gas
good ride for a truck way over loaded with bell whistles ect
wonder how long all that lasts without hi-cost replacements

if I wanted a truck
I would swap the drivetrain into an older simple single cab or ranger

saw an ad $5k for the motor and trans plus wires computer boxes to do that 6 turbo and auto 10 speed

I had a 2016 for a few years -- an XLT with the 2.7 Ecoboost. It was all the truck I would ever need. But, and this is a huge caveat, the halogen headlights are abysmal. We decided to upgrade to a Lariat to get the LED headlights, but couldn't source one in the spec we wanted, and then ended up with a new GTI.

Could you expand on what engine it is ? And the reasons for replacement ?

Not entirely the same but just recently bought a '22 f250. same cab i believe. Overall love it but it's not perfect.

dislike the 10spd although my understanding is the 1/2 and 3/4 ton trans are different. not sure how much is programming vs mechanical.

multiple qc issues on the cab including rubber door trim not correctly seated, misaligned door, missing paint on center console, etc.

i think i will keep it as there are a lot of things i like about the truck and in 3/4 ton there just aren't better options. same **** different brand. If it were a 1/2 ton i'd be trading it for a used Tundra (hate the '22).

On a more positive note the aluminum cab feels solid and relatively quiet. my concerns over a beer can truck have more or less disappeared. The comlaints i have are 100% Ford and 0% material related.

I found a couple that I might be interested in, but of course they're a couple hours away. One is in the Twin Cities, at a Dodge dealer. They've had it 41 days but have no pictures on their web site. The last time I looked a vehicle with no pictures it turned out to be at the dealership's body shop. Not wrecked but definitely used, lots of scratches and small dents, and man did it stink. The P.O. used it for turkey hunting, there were still feathers in the cab.
The other truck is of course in the opposite direction, toward Wausau. It's at a little dealership with only 16 cars, and the pictures are all the wrong aspect ratio. Maybe they're that way to distract you from the fact it has no running boards, even though it should have come with them. Makes me wonder if it has been wrecked.

I’ll ask him as I’m not up on Fords really. Known issues as I understand it. On the first replacement, he tried to get Ford to buy it back but, he would have lost quite a bit since he’d put different shoes on and a couple of other bolt on body mods. I want to say it’s a 2020. He doesn’t abuse it either from what I’ve seen. He also has an old beater for grunt work. Mainly uses his Ford for fishing trips and camping.

Had a 2009, that overall was a good truck (sunroof was a problem, leaked, and broke). Bought a 2020 in 2019. Have not put a ton of miles on it, but love it. When driven it is used as a truck. Towed several times, no issues. Eco boost is a great engine, much better torque than the v8 I had before. 10 speed works well. No issues. And gets a solid 17 around town, I like the bells and whistles, ordered it the way I wanted.

My buddy has a 2015 that he bought new. Only a couple problems. 1, power steering locked up early on. Had to be towed in for repair. Fixed under warranty 2, driver side mirror fell off. Dealer did not want to warranty it. They said he must have hit something. Not. After he pointed out how many new vehicles he bought from them they fixed it for free, off the books. Has about 60,000 miles on it now. It is a good truck.

I bought a used 2018 F150 Sport about 18 months ago. It had about 30K on the clock when I got it and now has 49K. It is equipped with the 2.7L V6 engine with twin turbos, has air, pwr steering, pwr brakes, pwr doorlocks, voice activated navigation, etc. I normally get about 22-23 mpg in town and 26-27 on the road. Since it has the aluminum body and the light V6 it drives and rides well and feels very light. I like it a bunch! Over the years I have owned several F150 trucks and this is my favorite thus far! Happy hunting.

Found out from my daughter, it’s a 2019 that he bought brand new. Still working on getting the details.

i test drove a 2020 with the 3.5L ecoboost. what a sweet truck. it was a FX4 if that means anything to anyone. all the bells/whistles. apple carplay, etc.

fast!! luxurious. i glanced down at the window sticker that was inside the car and almost choked myself out on my own saliva. it was $80,000. screech...test drive over.

got back in my archaic tacoma and drove my broke-ass home.

If it were me, I'd look for a vehicle from the south rather than one that has been brined every winter since purchased.
