I have a older set of Peltor ComTac that I bought years ago. Best hearing protection and when indoors next to rifle guys I also double up. These are crazy expensive now but have been the best, being water proof and if you wanted can hook up a iPhone to it to listen to music.

**Tip, when at ranges I always….repeat…always wear mine backwards! That way you can always hear what is going on behind you. Situational awareness at the range is critical and being able to hear guys talking behind you helps. And this usually doesn’t ever effect hearing what is in front of you for those time your not shooting and just bs’ing.

Have peltor electronics, they work real well.
Never liked the in ear plugs, irritates my ear canal and i just don't think they muffle well. enough or fall out like you experienced.

Hearing damage piles up, and previous damage sure gets triggered by new hits.
Once had a 45 go off by my ear without ear pro, the good old ringing for a day and luckily no permanent tenninitis.. but my right ear sure don't like loud noises now..

I always double up as well.
I found many muffs leave a small passage open due to your eye protection frames.
Really helps when taking the 1911 in .45 out.

Also agree about outdoor range, but we can't all be like Hickock 45

I have the same issue. As a former helicopter pilot I tried the ear plugs with the regular helmet ear cuffs. I just could not do it and have diminished hearing because of it.

I do have a set of Howard Leight Impact Sport that my son gave me for Christmas a few years ago.

They work great. I will also try the wearing backwards trick - first time I have heard that.

I am fortunate to have my own outdoor range. I have a box of muffs, ear plugs and eye protection for guests but as Jeff mentioned, outdoor shooting really doesn't require the high end protection for hearing.

Low profile electronic Peltors and as soon as someone starts making a lot of noise I where disposable foam plugs as well.

Squishy foam plug works better than the plunger style for me anyway.

Indoors, plugs (see above) and muffs.

Outdoors, plugs only UNLESS my buddy is shooting his SCAR17 - while the brake really does reduce recoil OMFG is it loud. Louder than a .50 Barrett. Anyway, when he breaks the SCAR out I either step back off the line for a bit or I get muffs on top of the plugs.
