My much younger cousin drilled a bunch of holes in some 6' logs (arranged on a pallet next to one of my ponds) and put in seeds (I reckon) and plugged em. He then sorta forgot about them....

So the next year (or mebbe it was two years later) when I was there there was a fine crop of Shiitakes ... a bunch. Had to tell my uncle so his youngin' could come by the pond and harvest them. He got several nice big bunches outta those logs.

Join a Facebook group dedicated to mushroom identification. There are at least two or three in North Carolina and countless others in your general area. Post a couple photos of what you have, top and bottom and they’ll tell you what they are. When yanking one out of the ground, don’t cut it, try to get the entire bulbous base, which can aid in identification.

Sometimes I feel like a mushroom.

Kept in the dark and fed ****.😂

Do be careful with mushrooms. Some grew on the lawn at my previous house and I was quite surprised they grew there. I lightly fried them in butter, and thoroughly enjoyed them, then nearly died.

Did you see the pretty colors and the dancing pink elephants?

and some are really funny when you eat them

These aren't funny 'shrooms .... and I don't have to eat one to know either.

This morning's harvest.... all appeared overnight. I'm gonna mow this area later... still a weekly thing. If I didn't remove them daily, there would be hundreds of them that the mower would pulverize... so they gotsta go.

The thatchy areas are from puppy dawg killing grass, and the dry periods we had earlier.... it was all lush fescue back in April..... same as every year tho'. These first appeared last summer... just in a small area of my back yard.

Lime aid to the rescue .... methinks! I'm open to suggestions .... or mailing addresses tho' :D.

Thanks!

If they'd happen to be edible you should plant some lettuce and tomatoes nearby then put a clean grass catcher on the mower. It'd make salads a breeze!

javadog 07-20-2022 08:12 AM

Those are crap photos but, from what I can tell, I would not suggest you eat one of those. Might be in the Amanita family.

Geronimo '74 07-20-2022 08:29 AM

I’d err one the safe side and listen to JD.
Poisonous shrooms are no joke.

KFC911 07-20-2022 08:36 AM

I'm definitely gonna listen to him ... this time! And if he had told me they were absolutely delicious ... then I would have just had to take his word for it :D. I appreciate the comments tho' .... I either need a bag of lime or a stick or two of dynamite. I'll try the lime first ;).

Geronimo '74 07-20-2022 08:37 AM

I’d pass on the eating until I was 100% sure.

There was always about a zero % chance .... I know how they've been fertilized and what turned the grass brown :D.

stevej37 07-20-2022 09:58 AM

^^^ Rinse them off first....then you are good to go. :D

Not as much fun as you describe.

The muscles on my back tightened up, I staggered through into my bedroom and collapsed on the bed then other muscles locked up and I was frozen like I'd cramp over most of my body. I mentioned it conversationally to doctor friends who said "OMG, that's called ???? and it can freeze up your heart muscles too, and you die."

Figure out what dosage just makes one particular thing stiff and you could be a billionaire! :D

Believe it or not, mushrooms are being studied for their usefulness in medicine, which portends to be considerable.

Tobra 07-20-2022 01:10 PM

Copper Sulfate is what you want for mushrooms.

Do not F around with eating wild mushrooms unless you know what you are doing. Also, wash your hands with soap and water after you clean that stuff up, like right after.

flipper35 07-21-2022 02:25 PM

Daughter says definitely not edible.
