I love post and rail fences. An yep, I've done some painting of them too - phew.

People around here use the platci fencing. It works great until there is a fire. Then there is melted plastic all over the place, but that actually happens to a small percentage. It works out well in terms of maintenance.

There is a lot of satisfaction after doing a job that shows results. If I hadn't been working on this paint job...I prob would have been wasting the time on something non-productive. :)

All I can say is, thankgoodness they make extensions for spray guns.

Each 12 foot section has 4 rails that are 1"X6"X12 foot long.
I feel the most important part of the painting is getting a good coat on the 1" portion of the rails that faces up because of the snow and rain. (esp the snow because it freezes and melts over and over) That's where the first paint peeling always starts.

Using a sprayer or thrower, to get a good coat on the 1" tops would prob lead to paint running when on the 6" wide portions. With a brush, I can control that easier.

I do have a Zoom paint sprayer with enough cord to reach the entire fence.

Vinyl Horse Fence

Yeah..I kinda figured I was calling it wrong with saying plastic....but I don't know much about it.

Do they still use wood 4X4 for the posts with that stuff? (under the vinyl)

I wouldn't think they could get enough strength out of vinyl to handle the wind load.

The vinyl stuff looks real nice. If I was to do it again, it would def be vinyl.

The picket fence I have was constantly being taken down by wind. It was allegedly designed to be just the vinyl post (hollow). But when wind load increased, it would just pull the bracket or tear a chunk out of the vinyl post. Worst investment I think I've ever made. I ended up putting 2x4's in the sleeves and fastening the fence brackets through the vinyl post into the 2x4. This fixed the problem of the posts tearing.

I just assumed the posts were all mounted to a 4X4...like a plastic mailbox is.

I just used a manual post hole digger for mine and poured a half bag of redi-mix in with each.
The only thing is I wish I would gone a little deeper...When the wind blows after a lot of rain, the rails catch so much wind that the posts start leaning. I have had to reset about a third of my posts over the years..deeper and a full bag of cement.
