I'm done...

after 750 running feet of fence, 5.5 gals of Valspar ext paint, and 3 four inch paint brushes. And that's not counting the pre-painting scraping or the liquid refreshments.:)

Went good...the worst part is the bottom rail. Need to sit or squat on the ground and then move every three feet or so. Should be good for another 5 years or so.

Now we need some more rain...

Great job - looks beautiful. I hope your knees are still in good enough shape in five+ years.

stevej37 07-22-2022 12:43 PM

^^^ Thanks.
I paint the higher parts until my paint carrier is low. Then I do the low rail...makes it easier with a mostly empty container.
Getting up with a full container is hard to do without spilling it.

I could have done that in an hour and spent the rest of the time drinking your beer!

porsche tech 07-22-2022 12:46 PM

Big job! The squatting down part hurts thinking about it! Nice work.

stevej37 07-22-2022 12:49 PM

^^^
I figure it only took me 16 hours, or less to do the whole thing. (and the beer stock is still good):)
If I would have waited another year or two...it would have taken a lot longer due to scraping.

Before I scrape or paint, I scrub the fence with bleach/soap water to remove the mold and algae (green) build-up.

It was only 3 years ago that I had a titanium rod placed in my broken femur.
Squatting is finally getting easy to do....the year or two after the surgery, it felt like something sharp poking in my hip...now it's all good.

^^^ I thought about one of those. My lawn, near the fence is not real level and smooth.
It still might have worked. The other thing I will do next time is use knee pads. The dried dead grass was hard on my knees.

Racerbvd 07-22-2022 01:41 PM

Impressive..

There's a guy in Kentucky, wants to know how much you charge...

^^^ I've seen that when passing through.
I think he was smart and used plastic instead of wood.

Thanks! It started as a small project in the first pic to separate my property from my neighbors.
I liked it so much that I built onto it for the other two sides.

I didn't think (at that time) of the maintenance/painting that would be involved later.

It's been worth it.

Captain Ahab Jr 07-22-2022 02:23 PM

Looks great!

My knees hurt just looking at it :D

stevej37 07-22-2022 02:39 PM

^^^ Thanks...my knees feel ok now.
When painting, getting off my knees was the hardest part.:)

Great job, Steve. Particularly the part about the pre-wash and scraping. I can see your problem, Steve. If you just cut a few corners it would be way easier. ;)

Me? I'm getting to the point where I'd probably just find someone else to do it. Or move to a lower maintenance place. But then...I'm old.

stevej37 07-22-2022 03:19 PM

^^^ Thanks....I'll be 70 next year. I don't feel it and don't want to.

I have an 85 year old woman neighbor that works outdoors every day (weather permitting)
She is my inspiration...lol.

Superman 07-22-2022 03:48 PM

Impressive, Steve. I'm 64, active, HWP. But OMG have I lost a step since I was 26. And no amount of hard work can now get me back in what I would call good shape. My strategy is to move slower. And keep moving. I'm not dead yet, and I plan to go down swinging. You too, it seems. There are those who are busy living, and those who are busy dying. I'm raising my glass, Steve.
