Good brands for or good models of home def shotspoons

If you were going to buy a basic shotspoon, and its primary purpose would be home defense and/or random target type shooting, are there good models or brands or are there models or brands to avoid?

Love my Mossberg 500. The military went with the Mossy 590. Police departments across the country used and still use Remington 870s.

That 'and/or' doesn't really work too well as you will be forced to compromise. Longer barrel lengths for clays, shorter for home defense.

HD only i like the Beretta 1301. Compromise would be the Beretta A300 in say 26" barrel if available. Excellent albeit ugly clays gun. Available in wood or synthetic stocks.

Not a fan of inertia guns (Benelli, Franchi) for HD given the ease of knocking the bolt out of battery without realizing it. Recoil is greater with them as well which is a negative in clays shooting.

Avoid turk guns if you can afford it. if you must then Tristar has the best rep.

Don't trust any remington to cycle when i need it so that brand is out for me. Browning maybe if you find one that floats your boat.

HD

Mossy 930 in tactical. For HD, "autoloader" for the win. Rack it once and let the music begin.

Way too easy to short shuck a pump under stress, same with a bolt.

and yeah short barrel with extended magazine........

Clays, any good breach load two hole will do, pref O/U Mine is a Sarsilmaz ("turk" gun) and it worked just fine for thousands of rounds.

Ford or Chevy ?

Some years back I was looking for one, and I prefer a pump over an automatic.... I was searching for an older Ithaca (since I'm a lefty), but not finding one.... went to a couple of gun shops and put my hands on some new Remington 870 and also a few Mossbergs.... honestly, they felt cheap and I like wood .

I found an older Remington 870 with a 20" (or 19ish) bbl... made the way spoons (and just about everything it seems were supposed to be) on an online site after searching and looking. Met the guy halfway ... he lived in the mtns. Solid spoon, just as he described.... old skool.

Think I paid $350ish....

Use Fiocchi 00 Defensive load buckshot. That load will fire 9 .30 cal pellets in the shape of a football and you've gotta aim.... the pattern doesn't really spread much even at 10, 20, or 30 ft... with minimal recoil compared to hunting buckshot. Instant show stopper too...

It's not a target gun fwiw...
You need a Diana air rifle (or other).... you and your grandson will have a hoot with them too

Do not read Higgin's threads about them.... that man is pure evil... evil I tells ya !

Happy searching...

I've got a benelli M2 with extended magazine. a very fast action and great gun. no ferkin' about with a pump for me. Easy to throw three clays in the air with one hand then shoot all three before they hit the ground. https://www.benelliusa.com/shotguns/m2-field-shotguns

I've got an old Mossberg 500 with a barrel for trap, a barrel for bedside. It doesn't take that long to swap.

Thanks folks. I know squat about shot spoons. I'm pretty unlikely to do any clay shooting. I suspect this thing will mostly sit somewhere like a fire extinguisher. It'll maybe get used once or twice every once in a while to make sure it works.

I'd assumed shorter barrels are better for HD. What I'm picturing is the Toyota/Honda of the HD shot-spoon world. Any/every time you pick it up, it doles out a heaping helping garbanzo beans (sticking with the whole "spoon" thing).

My preference would be for something with wood furniture, but since it'll probably not get used more than once or twice, I'm not sure there's a good reason to pay extra for real wood.

What about CZ as a brand. It seems to get a fair amount of love in the tablespoon and teaspoon arenas. They also make shot spoons. I see that there's a "CZ 712 Utility G2 12g Semiauto " with a 20" barrel.

I just ask for conversation's sake.

Easy enough (and cheap enough, IMO) to get two -- one for HD, one for clays, etc.

Mossy 500 for me, mostly because I've had one for years and train with it and am comfortable with it. If I were starting from scratch, I'd consider Mossberg 500/590 for a pump or Mossberg 930/Beretta 1301 for SA.

Yeah, I have been thinking that an air gun of some sort would be fun for me and the grandsons. We just got the 6yo a bow and arrows. I'm going to wait until he's more set with the archery before we move to air guns.

Thanks, I can do a search. I get it, you're not super technical or good at the "IT" stuff.

About 8 years ago, I sold a Mossy 500a w/24" rifled barrel when we downsized. As with so many things, you later think, "wish I still had that." But, we were downsizing, and the theory was that if we needed the stuff again, we'd buy it.

I have an 870 retired PD with an extended magazine for home. Have shot it enough that the whole racking stress thing is not a concern.

For clays I have an old Browning while my son has a Beretta that is only a few years old. It however was not inexpensive.
