They use words to explain what other words mean.

How do we know for sure the words used to explain what other words meant actually meant what they meant before there were dictionaries to explain what the words that explain other words meant?

The only thing we know for sure is that I think, therefore I am. Everything else is an extrapolation from that certainty. The words we use to express the meaning of words seems to be effective because others are able to understand our meaning from them. But perhaps we’re all simply delusional in the same sort of way, so we understand each other through our delusions.

In English, the meaning or definition of a word often changes, and many words have multiple definitions depending on how the word is used in a sentence.

Lawyers argue over the meaning of words all the time, even simple words. Like what the definition of "is" is.
