Wow! A rare WIN against cat theft.

I'm amazed at the amount of money involved here.

I hope they spend a lot of time in jail. Likely not near enough. Mostly I hope the IRS sends a meanest auditor after each of them and puts them in jail for tax evasion after the state lets them out. And seize every possible asset they had.

Wow, crazy.

THey should all have a knee remove. Cut right above and right below and then reconnect all of the stuff.

I think that would’ve cost the owners of the cars they vandalized a lot more than $22 million in damage.

In that first post they say they initially stopped a guy driving a car with 100 catalytic converters in it. How do you fit that many in a car unless it was a van of some sort?

If that had been my van in the video I think I would have just hopped in it and driven over the guy. OPPPS...sorry didn't see you there.

So I am in the commercial insurance biz. There was a time a few months ago when I was getting something like 2-4 claims per week on this. Damn. These guys had a racket. It takes a Junkie and a portable sawzall and you have a significant income stream. Glad they were busted.

There are numerous car part yards in MI that have signs out.."We buy Cat-Converters"

People take their own CC off for $75-$125 at the yards. No law against it.
And no inspection to see if you sold it.

Lake Zero

Catalytic Converter theft makes everyone money, except the victim. It never goes away

44,000 stolen converters in a couple of years? How do you move that many without drawing attention?

My E46 has them built-in to the exhaust manifolds, so they would be hard to steal. They not sit on a shelf and have been replaced with headers.

I have a customer who lives in a ghetto apt complex. He told me a story about his daughter's BF borrowing his car for a job interview and stole the cat, but had welded a straight pipe in its place. My customer said there was a mini mart nearby where you could pay some tweaker outfront $50 to tune someone up and he was thinking of doing that. I'm glad I know where to go if this happens to me and I catch the perp.

AZ has a new program, I think it starts tomorrow, where you can get your cat engraved for free. I don't know how that would possibly deter thieves, unless they notice the engraving before they cut it out, figuring they may have a hard time selling it. Otherwise, anyone would be able to polish it out before selling to the scrap yard.

Sounds like this is more like a program to be able to trace stuff after the fact rather than prevent. I'm pretty sure the cops know that they can't do much to prevent.

The scrap yards in phoenix make you put a thumb print and driver's license to sell scrap. And we're talking 40+ dollars.

I need to get rid of the cats from my Cummins. . But they're a pita to sell.
