When I had my '72 911E,, I made a short sprint up to 125 on the speedo. The straight away wasn't overly long, so I didn't push it. Other than that, I never went more than 85 tops.

I don't think I've ever not gotten a car that I owned for any period of time up and over 85. Many/most of the econoboxes may have only been ~90 as that was probably about their max.

My wife's Tesla is a hoot to jam the accelerator on, but I only did that a couple of times to get the feel of it & hardly ever drive it above 70. Supposedly the programed top is around 130. I always wondered how quickly it would get there, but I'm not going to try.

KMH
200 on the back stretch at Mosport.
Pretty easy to do 200 on the highway
Most was around 235

I upgraded the "Suicide Blond", my factory 914/6, to a RS Spec 2.7 with S cams and a rev limited distributor. I think the rev limiter was 7000 RPM, with the final gear ratio of the 914/6 standard gearing, the maximum theoretical speed was 136 mph. Somewhere on I-8, it reached over 130 mph. I did not hit the rev limit, but I was close.

When I bought my car in Atlanta and drove it home to Chicago, I was on a highway (not the interstate) somewhere in Indiana, no traffic, when I decided to see how fast I was confortable with. Got to about 105 indicated, that was enough. At normal highway speeds, 65, 75 and 85 all feel the same so I often find myself going not particularly fast. Aside from which I'm middle-aged and not much of a risk-taker.

LOL, some fun times have been had. It sure is feels good going too fast.

I was having a snooze, my wife was drivin' our '86 911, I took the pictures when I woke up. BTW MPH. Back roads, I was impressed.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1661368756.jpg

Tobra 08-24-2022 12:14 PM

Had the 914 up to about 110, surprisingly solid, 911 up to about 130 on the speedo more solid. Donorcycle went by me going WAAAAY faster than I was, and I coasted back down to 80

Nordwest 08-24-2022 12:26 PM

140 in my SC. Thats all she had....

Scott Douglas 08-24-2022 12:37 PM

My wife once had our '02 Accord sedan up to 100 in a construction zone in Utah.
I won't tell you how fast or how many times I did something like that on my way to work as it may incriminate me. Let's just say it was one of the 'perks' of driving into work as early as I did back then.
I never checked the speedo when I circled the track at Fontana as I was too worried about running into the guy in front of me in my SC. It was at one of those PCA events where they let you do that at lunch time.

Jeff Higgins 08-24-2022 12:46 PM

I have never even tried on a public road. My home track, Pacific Raceways, has a long enough front stretch for me to touch the mid 130's if I stay in it, which I rarely do anymore. I usually lift a bit before the first turn and coast through it at about 120. Our front stretch is the drag strip, and the first turn drops off to the right at a significant angle. It is not necessary at all to lift for turn one, so I used to keep it to the wood all the way to the turn two braking zone. The problem with my car, and any early 911 lacking any sort of aero, is that they will wag their tails pretty violently when "falling off" the drag strip into turn one. My son's SC, with its whale tail, remains planted, as do my buddies' cars with ducktails. I have neither, so my car can get pretty worrisome getting through that corner in the 130's, so I just back off.

Mathematically, the car should touch 140 at redline. I'm sure it will, it pulls hard to the mid 130's, but I've just never been anywhere I would even dare try. Public roads are not the place for me. Mainly because they are so relatively poorly paved - things get really, really hectic in my car when even starting to approach triple digits on them.

Funny, too, to that point - I always ask the braggarts how it felt when they hit a buck eighty in their turbo Subaru. How rough did the road feel? How in the hell did you keep it between the lines? The usual answer is "what?... it was fine"... Uh huh...

Cloggie 08-24-2022 01:20 PM

260kmh in my highly modified 911 - call it 162 mph, verified by GPS.

This was Munich to the Stuttgart Porsche Museum - did it in 90 minutes door to door (its 259 km).

I am now too old for those speeds, but I recall that I had two sphincter tightening moments, one when I went over a somewhat curved bridge - which at 260 is not a curve...its an 'effin corner. Second was a PL truck driver who elected to overtake in the fast lane, thinking he was way clear of me. Well, I had an overtake speed of about 150kmh on him and before no time I was hard on the brakes and thankfully slowed in time.

Also humorous moment was following an Audi S4 station wagon driven by a rather attractive blond....complete with groceries and a potted fern she was obviously hauling home. At high speeds she could pull away from me after slowing down for things, but I think that car is speed governed, so I could always catch up, overtake only to have her pass me again when we did a slow for traffic/return to high speed. All the while the fern was waving merrily in the back window....

Had the Integra north of 130 in the middle of nowhere in Texas one time, still took a long time to get there, Texas is BIG

Jeff Higgins 08-24-2022 01:43 PM

I've had my Ducati up to much higher speeds on public roads. To some, that might sound insane, or at least somewhat misguided, but I actually feel "safer" in doing so. For one thing, it takes a lot less room, a lot less time, to get up there and back down. I've never sustained it over any distance, just short bursts where I have good visibility and what appears a smooth road. I'll tell you what, though - getting bounced out of the seat by some unseen dip gets rather "exciting". Getting too old for that nonsense anymore.

rattlsnak 08-24-2022 06:41 PM

As far as air cooled, 135 ish in the NA cars and 160 ish in the turbo cars…. All on the track…. I regularly cruise at 85ish with spurts up to 100 in day to day commuting..

id10t 08-24-2022 07:36 PM

And for the record, I've had the 356 up to 90 downhill with a tail wind. Coulda maybe gone 95 or even 100 but original motor with 130k on it 4500 seemed like a sane rev limit.
