How fast have you driven your aircooled 911?
How fast have you driven your aircooled 911?
The fastest I've driven the SC is 235kmh which is something like 146mph. That was hitting the redline in top gear. I didn't take my eyes off the road to look at the speedo, just the rev counter then later looked at what the speed would be from the manual. |
140 on my 930. It has a lot more left but I chickened out and didn't feel like going back to jail again:)
|
My last air cooled track car (the green car) hit about 145 on the track.... Fast enough for me...
My current aircooled 69T I have driven to about 90mph lol... Cheers |

The question is how long was this high speed sustained? I reached 140 and let off immediately. Yep, I was chicken because at that speed, a lot can happen really fast.
|
Last time such a thread appeared here, Grady Clay posted a pic of a 935...he was behind the wheel. He said no speedometer, but the tach indicated somewhere north of 200. Uh, nope...I never came close.
|
145 mph in my SC and that was verified using a stand alone GPS speedo.
Once you're over 100 mph nothing really changes until 160 mph or so. Above that and it starts to get really scary. |
150 or so on the track in my 930.
140 going straight onto a long bridge in town with no traffic. |
140 in the rain on the interstate. car was solid. i slowed down after my buddy on his bike passed me.
|
140 in my SC on a long slight downhill Ohio Turnpike stretch in my SC. Not a car in sight.
Brought a GPS with me the next time. That 140 speedo reading was 123 mph. |
Indicated 275kmh in my 930. So probably 260ish. Never, ever again.
|
135 right before slamming on the brakes hard for turn 10A at Road Atlanta.

160 in the 930. (GPS) the speedos are never correct.
its funny, i am scared to death on the roads over 100t but on a track i am fine. more worried about going to jail or a deer jumping out. i also dont go that fast when other cars are around. whats funny is on the track it does not seem like i am going fast. 130 feels like 50 or 60. until you wreck. hit a tire wall at 130 in race car. put me in the air and came down nose first. i did get pulled over for doing 100 in a 30. also passed on a double yellow the cop let me go. |
This all sounds like the Group W bench. Kid, what you in for?

It was on the track at Charlotte Super speedway. They told us in the driver's meeting, that after the infield curvy parts, to get onto the banking to be sure to get up there with both right tires at once, then both left tires, the get going. So I ran to redline in 2nd, third, 4th and put it in 5th as the track straightens out for the back straight. My instructor said in a clear voice, "whatever you do, do NOT hit the brakes in the back curve" but my attachments were not large enough to stay hard on the gas so I did lift the throttle in the curve going triple digits.
I glanced at the tachometer, and it was 5,300 RPM or so, the wind noise was tremendous and the engine was screaming. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1661344324.JPG Full tilt, guessing about 135 or so. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1661344324.JPG In the pit garage, about to roll out for a session. |
I've found myself accidentally cruising at 95... which is unusual 'cause I really don't speed, even in cars that are very capable of doing so.
No track access, etc. but one time out in the middle of nowhere (straight line road for 2 miles ahead, perfect visibility, bordered by recently plowed fields so no deer to jump out, etc) I did get it to 110 and then backed off. When Dad bought the car in '89 he took it to a DE event at Sebring the following weekend, got clocked at 129 on the track. IIRC top speed in that car per factory docs is 134ish ('84 w/ M491 option - bigger heavier body, etc. but normal engine, the slowest of the '84-89 cars but only by a few mph) Gotta say... much more fun to hit a interstate onramp w/ a 270 degree curve in the 356, go in at 30, come out at 50 and with a smile on my face.... and without breaking the speed limit :) It is much more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car slow. |
'88 911 targa redline in 5th which is around 150-152 somewhere on I10 in LA with an S2000 behind me but easily keeping up. When I hit redline, I pulled over and let off. It had a front spoiler, but no rear spoiler. It probably also had 90k miles on the struts, although they seemed OK. I definitely noticed the rear end feeling light, but the front felt OK.
'08 Boxster S, indicated 152. (obviously not air-cooled) The GPS in my phone usually puts the speedo 1-2mph optimistic at regular speeds, so maybe 2-3mph at that speed. |

160 and change in a modified 930.
|
275 Km/h in our 930 on german highway. Stopwatch verified.
|
115 mph on both the front and back straights at VIR in my SC. Car would start to get "light" and I would lift.

My SC never had the front spoiler. I went 114 into a head wind once. Super sketchy. The airflow felt wrong.
Funny? I was on a fishing trip to Montana with my son in my 100 series Land Cruiser. I looked down at the speedo and saw 95! |
I'm guessing a little north of 140, traveling northbound on 580, next to Washoe Lake...between Carson City and Reno.
I've also seen 110 in my Cooper S, on 285, outside of Atlanta. |
try 160 with the sunroof open . LOUD.
i wanted to do the road course at charlotte in my late model race car. |
Hum...
189 Ruf BTR 192 Ruf CTR 154 SC 148 69S race car rather not say Audi R8 Plus |
^^^ Heck, in the interest in keeping my car insurance, I'd rather not say.
|
In my 88' it hit 149 a few times.
|
19.8 seconds for a measured mile. Middle on nowhere FM north Texas. Roads there are like the ET highway,

Weren't you driving the white GT3R at Sebring earlier today? Ahem, yes????? I guess this one is not as fast.... I'll give you a ticket for seatbelt since I would have to throw you in jail overnight otherwise...... He was cool. Even said be careful, lots of patrols on 27 including a plane |
Very nice!

Oddly, I felt the exact opposite. I took several trips in my M5 while living in Germany. One, sans family, down towards Swiss border on the A7 near Ulm (down where Abt is headquartered). I recall around 125 mph or a bit north of that. Felt totally comfortable since it was very light traffic and that section of Autobahn was unrestricted. On the flip side, when driving on the 'Ring I was wetting myself. It is scary as all get out and the motorcycles close you down pretty fast. I also didn't want to crack up my car. In my 911E I don't think I ever made it over 80 or 85. Just not as comfortable in that as in other cars. |
