Time for a new grill. Pellet?
Traeger pellet grill at Costco caught my attention yesterday.
I ran gas line under the new deck, but decided not to permanently mount a grill. Plugging it in and pouring in pellets seems easy. Will this replace a gas grill?

I have zero experience with one...but a recent phone call with a friend has me believing his Traeger is something else...the guy really gave it raves.

We bought a medium sized Traeger grill 7 years ago. We don't really use it as a smoker unless we are doing ribs. Fish, veggies, jacket potatoes, ribs, tri tip, chicken all are awesome on it. Very easy to manage. I have not enjoyed ribeyes or any kind of pork product cooked on it.
The grill has seen better days and took a-lot of abuse (rarely covered and kept outside). The heater element no longer works but that is an easy fix. I will give it a deep clean and repair to keep it around. That said, we splurged on a new Weber Genesis 2 propane grill and love it so far. |

Well... that changes NOTHING. I'm still disgusted. These pellet folks are the reason it's getting harder to find smoking chunks and real charcoal. FWIW, I own three grills. Weber Summit propane, Weber kettle, and Weber Smokey Mountain. I know guys that absolutely love their Traeger. They disgust me too!

I've got a Weber Kettle, a Kamado (BGE clone), a Weber Genesis and a Traeger pellet.
I get the most use out of the Genesis and the Traeger. I'm thinking of ditching the Kamado since the Traeger does ribs and chicken much better. No more adding chunks of wood, opening/closing vents, etc. With the Traeger app it really is a "set it and forget it" experience. I got this one. Go big or go home! https://www.costco.com/traeger-silverton-620-pellet-grill.product.100506764.html

How to cook ribs: 2:2:1 and done.
And craigster, if ya lived closer I'd take that Kamado off your hands! I've been wanting one of those. I read that the BGE and the Kamado are great for making pizza on.

Using a smoker isn't easy but the results are worth the effort. And you get to keep your man card. What's next, a minivan? ![]() Also, aren't the pellets pretty expensive?

I totally understand the hate for pellet grills, but I do have one. If you’re serious about getting one, check out Recteq. Far superior to the Traeger in construction and cost.

I fired up the big smoker and did 8 racks of baby back ribs and two racks of beef back ribs.
It is a huge amount more work to do than using my BGE but the flavor! Compared to the offset, the BGE is an oven. I find the temperature is that easy to control. I don't have a pellet grill but I have friends that love the set and forget ease of use. Those that have had a Kamado grill too will often comment that it is harder to get good flavor from the pellet grills. Getting back to my last cook, don't ever cook pork ribs at the same time as beef ribs! The beef ribs by far were better, more flavorful and made my pork ribs seem kind of meh... The pork ribs are still (in my opinion) excellent!

Hard to beat for around $100. Add a chimney for starting the coals and they're REALLY hard to beat for the money.

Anyone ever try one of these boxes: La Caja China, sort of like a huge Dutch oven
