USOPEN ? Serena ?

Anyone watching ? Pretty "open" this year.

Was watching that game yesterday with Serena and Kontaveit.. Honestly I'm not sure what the exact standards are for dress code - they are more lax at the US open than wimbledon but how far can you go ? but Senera's top and hair were 100% glittering under the lights like a damn Xmas tree. At some point I thought it was lit up with batteries or something but no just reflections. If I was her opponent I would have complained, it was distracting to watch on TV, I cannot imagine while playing her. Not to take away form her talent and career, but maybe less disco ball for fairness ?

this post really has a lot of this energy: https://www.sportbible.com/tennis/one-in-eight-men-think-they-can-beat-serena-williams-sboz-20220721

At least this year's outfit is not obscene like in the past.

I have tried to watch both of her matches and have had to shut it off because the love-fest by the commentators and the crowd.

When a crowd applauds a fault or error by Serena's opponent I want to scream. Are they enjoying the sport or just want to see her win because of an agenda? They a making a mockery of tennis.

Serena has earned a place in history and is playing very well but I refuse to endure the rest of it.

hummmm, do you dont cheer when the opposing team throws an interception to your team?

a black woman is unbelievably good at something, and all a bunch of old white dudes can talk about is what she wears .... its honestly, honestly, so transparent.

Serena and her sister are both amazing players, no question. But the press has come unglued over her performance - while she did beat the No. 2 player it was only the second round. It's all uphill going forward.

now comes the tone policing .... do you criticise the announcers for praising the winning super bowl team?

its so blatantly obvious. a black woman is legendarily good at something, and all white men can do is pick at anything they think they can attack about her.

What is so transparent?

maybe someday we can have that conversation on this website, but today isnt that day.

the williams sisters get treated very differently that other sports figures here, and actually, you can add Lewis Hamilton to that list too ... wonder why that is?

Oh Brother... Serena is good, I stated as much. it's the press I find to be getting carried away. Are you familiar with tennis - it was the second round...

I am familiar with tennis. I played for many years.

tone policing is just another form.

I would have thought something so transparent wouldn’t need a long conversation. Doesn’t need any conversation or participation by me (or seemingly anyone else), it was your statement.
Just identifying what you say is so transparent would suffice. You had something in mind when you made the statement, I’m just wondering what it was.

i wouldnt have thought so either, once i pointed it out, but here we are.

While i do like Serena i thought the reporting after she beat the #2 player was way over the top. They acted like she won the whole event...!

green 73 09-01-2022 09:05 PM

I quit watching tennis when those amazons beat Martina Hingis twenty years ago.
I thought Hingis had all the right moves and skills but she did not have the weight
That those two had. Even after she bulked up the next year which was a mistake in my opinion her game was know longer there.

flatbutt 09-02-2022 04:11 AM

The excitement is due to her impending retirement and that at the end of her career she can still play a great game.

rfuerst911sc 09-02-2022 04:36 AM

Old white guy here: Serena has had an amazing career, I think she has been an ambassador for tennis and is now nearing the end via retirement . She has made tons of $$$ , is married with a family and has other business adventures outside of tennis . What's the problem/ controversy ?

upsscott 09-02-2022 05:38 AM

The media fawns all over Tom Brady nonstop. Remember when Kareem retired? Every arena had a presentation for him with a gift. Why? Because he is one of the best to ever do it. In Serena’s case, she probably is the best to ever do it. Give her the credit because it has been earned many times over.

DWBOX2000 09-02-2022 06:55 AM

I think of she was in shape she could win this thing. Unfortunately I think her body will stop her, not skill or heart. She was something. I wonder how Martina navitalova/ Steffi Graf would have played her?

javadog 09-02-2022 07:05 AM

I took a look at some video highlights from the event, I don’t think the outfit was distracting. From what I’ve read, the partisan crowd was a bit more of a problem.

DWBOX2000 09-02-2022 07:08 AM

I would think the outfit wouldn’t be an issue. If grunting doesn’t bother players, I doubt an outfit would. When did Grunting get so poplukar with the players?
