Another Collector Car Insurance Thread

Pretty simple question. I have three soft quotes from Hagerty, American Collectors and Leland West. $629, $411 and $381 respectively. And so, for me, this is only a question of who would treat me best in the event of a claim. Any experiences you can share?

I posted this in early 2021 and made the switch.
No info about claims, however.

Just got a renewal notice from Hagerty.
Premium has risen from $670 to $755.
That's a huge jump. I've never made a claim.

I am getting tired of Hagerty and their fluff.
They are squeezing their customers and getting greedy.
I don't want a lifestyle company, I want a no-frills insurance company.

I might shop around, but am wary of shady coverage that does not pay on claims.
American Collectors just gave me a soft online quote of $302. Very tempted.
Has anyone ever made a claim under American Collectors?

I have only used American Collectors, and had a single claim, deer hit in the 911, rf fender, hood and valence. They sent an contract adjuster out to see the car, wrote a check for $3500 or so, no questions asked. Quick and easy.

No personal experience just this story. A friend in the 912 group had a 356 coupe he had insured stated value with Hagerty. $25k if I recall. His car got knocked over the side of the road up on Angeles Crest by a mini van that had hit some black ice. He got a check for $25k no questions asked after they investigated the incident. Don't know what his premium was. It impressed me for being an insurance company that deals mainly with old cars.
Have you gotten a quote from Grundy?
We always use(d) State Farm for my old cars. Never had a claim though.

My experience with Hagerty is they are high. See all those ads on TV and everywhere else? That money is coming in from somewhere.....

My personal experience is Grundy is very good and very low cost for agreed value coverage. I have my '56 Chevy Rat Rod and our '85 911 and their terms are very reasonable. I think that a lot of insurance companies are getting into the classic vehicle coverage arena. Lots more choices these days VS say, than 10 years ago.

According to my reading, Grundy is a bit more restrictive than the others regarding how and when the vehicle can be driven. No commuting, which is a common restriction. But also no other uses other than pleasure driving and car shows. Don't get into a collision in a grocery store parking lot. According to my reading. I am retired and I rarely drive the 911, but I want to do so at any time, and for any reason, I choose.

Yes, I have heard repeatedly that Hagerty is the most expensive. They happen to also be the highest quote I have seen.

Thinking about switching. Just got my renewal for Hagerty and its $850 for the year. 40k agreed value on my 911. No claims etc.

Don't understand when people get so fuzzy about insurance premiums hike.

The asset is worth a lot more... they are liable for more.

To answer OP question I use Hagerty.... I have 2 complete losses. Catastrophic. I was treated well. Still with them

I just got off the phone with Grundy and their quote for the same agreed value is $500 less than Hagerty. I was shocked... still have not decided but I may switch. I don't read the Hagerty magazine anyway.

I'll have to look at my Grundy policy again. When I purchased it a couple years ago, there were no restrictions such as you state. You can't use the car as a daily driver, but there were no restrictions on driving the car to work once in awhile or going to the grocery store.

Maybe I'm just a contrarian a-hole, but I complain about the rising value of these cars. They were more fun (or maybe it was the crowd around them) when they were cheaper. I use to go on group drives and rallies, and there would be 2 or 3 other 930s in the group. Now, the only place I see them is at Rennsport and Luftgekuhlt. And half of those cars have that pontilist Turbo graphic on the sides, which was pretty much unknown of--even amongst the turbo guys--about 10 years ago.

You're right about rising valuations and rising insurance premiums. But what about when someone keeps the same agreed value policy, and yet the premium rises?

I use American National (ANAPAC) for my house, and all three cars. My 911 has agreed value as does my El Camino. I am restricted to 7,499 miles per year, and that is not an issue as even on long trips I am usually under that.

I pay 422 per year for full coverage with a 65K agreed valuation. The El Camino is even cheaper to insure as it is less valuable.

Back in 2007 I was in California and a crazy deer decided to try to jump through my windshield. She caved in the hood, smashed the windshield, and headlight rings, fenders and lots of damage. It was derivable, and after driving through LA at rush hour with a smashed windshield, I got to San Diego and got a new windshield installed and drove it home.

The insurance company did not blink. I got several estimates, and I took it to a place that specializes in old air cooled 911s. I told him to make it look like it did before. It was just a ultimate bug hit, rock chip. No rock chips after it was done.

Yes, that was my point exactly. Nothing changed in terms of cars, coverage, or valuation. This years bill is 40% more than last years. Seems like a hell of a jump. I will check out Grundy as you advised.

Yes, I agree with you about the other point too. It was more fun when the cars were not so valuable and treated like investments. They were meant to be driven and enjoyed. Not worshipped. I drive the '57 356 (called the "turd" because of its faded old paint) frequently. Not "daily", but usually several days a week. Not a "commute" since my home is my office now. But I use it regularly for functional trips into town. Its pleasant to drive, and practical (30 mpg).

I've been using Chubb for a few years, had a couple of minor interactions with them, a few LONG roadside assistance calls, and a new windshield, all went extremely well and easily, and I'm saving one third of the money I was giving to Hagerty. I'm still a fan of Hagerty, I believe they are helping to keep the vintage car hobby alive and well, so I joined their drivers' club so I can stay part of the family, and they give some roadside assistance in to that program, to keep me happy.

If it's available in your state call Porsche insurance . Someone on this forum suggested that when I posted a similar question about a month ago .

It is under written by an insurance company not by Porsche . My agreed value policy for both of my Porsche's is very reasonable . They also state that only Porsche OEM parts will be used for repairs .

They don't do business in all states so may not be an option . I assume because headquarters are in Atlanta is why they write policies in Georgia . Works for me .

There is an agreed value coverage.
How does it get $500 more expensive to cover the same $40k agreed value?

No collision insurance....they are fun cars that I paid cash for.
MI also offers a $30 plate for 10 years.....I have them on both.
(car must be 26 years old)
