Australia II '83 America's Cup Race
"Untold: The Race of the Century" Netflix has a great documentary on the 1983 America's Cup yacht race and how the Australian team became the first country in 132 years to win it from the US. I remember it being a big deal at the time and the film covers much detail on the effort. Well worth a look!

Thanks Kurt. I remember when it all happened very well and "we" celebrated for months! (no joke)

Rumor has it that Dennis Conners skull resides in a dark hiding place...
I miss the "lead bottomed money gobbler" races..

I think this was the start of the whole wing keel thing.

Yep, they kept a "skirt" around the bottom of Australia II when she was lifted out of the water so that no one would see her secret.
I remember watching the races and then watching four years later as Stars and Stripes, under the command of Dennis Conner, would win the cup back only to be challenged by Michael Faye from New Zealand. That challenge Faye showed up with a behemoth ship and Conner had a 60ft long catamaran!!! Hobie Cat helped with the building of that awesome catamaran, it had a rigid wing shaped sail and hauled butt!!! Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk

Started OCS right after in 83. Great time to be there, though it was a number of weeks before we got to experience Old Newport.

We used to sail up from Ct for the weekend to watch the races in those days, quite the spectacle on the water and a ball at night along the waterfront

On my list.
Zero interest in boating, but I recall this was a HUGE deal in 1983.

This was a great documentary! Ran into Dennis at a local dock, nice enough guy, his eyes were totally shot, though, worse than in the documentary.
