Puerto Rico loses power again
I thought the grid was repaired after Hurricane Maria but apparently it was not improved.

Just texted a buddy from San Juan but in Ohio. He was worried Saturday about his mom/extended family in PR. All ok but massive flooding.
Side note: I remember my first time in the San Juan airport when I went to the money exchange with $100 US and was looking to change it out for some Puerto Rican currency. There was alcohol involved. ![]()

The US will pay another huge payment to help rebuild the grid. They live on an island that gets hit with a hurricane on a regular basis and destroys most of the grid every time, and tears up houses on the beaches. Rinse and repeat.

FB, grid was repaired but not really improved from a resiliency standpoint. Much of PR still uses poles & overhead wires to transmit electricity, no bueno in a hurricane.
Same is still true in much of the Pacific NW -- trees made super-heavy w/ snow & ice fall onto power lines pretty easily when soil is soft/wet and wind picks up.

Hurricanes and above ground power grids is a recipe for failure. This has been proven many times over . Insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results 😜

Moving overhead lines underground is typically incredibly expensive. But for an island in hurricane country, might be worth it.

Speaking of overhead lines and Puerto Rico..... See one minute in for the drone video. They knew it was coming down. This telescope receiver was in the movie Contact. Here's a snippet from the movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfiOT14MyaQ&ab_channel=ostinatoscope

While on business in PR I got caught in Hurrican Debbie. It just side swiped San Juan where I was but still turned the entire city into an open sewer. It was very scary. I got out 2 days later but man what a mess.
