What is the latest anybody here has changed jobs ?
Related to Fred's thread.
Work from home has stirred up the job market. Lots of former co-workers are taking new jobs, doing basically the same thing, for $25k/year more or higher salaries. Not moving, working from home. I talked to a former co-worker Friday night, he left a couple years ago, he's never been to the office at his new job. Me? I think I'm too close to retirement for anyone to consider me as a hire. But with people only working 3-5 years in a job, then leaving for a higher paying one, what's the difference? I'm not talking about quitting your job to start your own business, I'm talking about working for the man, then working for a different man, what's the latest in your career that you've changed jobs? My boss told us that's he's looking for something different. He's not the greatest person to work for, but there are far worse. Depending on who replaces him, I may change jobs or retire. |

I sold my dental practice at 54 years of age to then get a “full time job” (3 days a week, 9 months a year) teaching dental hygiene/assisting at a local college.
Stress level went down, pay/benefits better. Currently 57 years old and couldn’t be happier. Should have done it 20 years ago.

I left automotive retail service in 2012; working for someone else for good.. Then I started with a local county ( 2nd wealthiest in the US) in IT, part-time at the 1st level of support for essentially very little money. The thing was if I went to full time merit position, the starting salary was $68k for the same job. I was 53 when I started there. I worked there 2 years and flipped / worked on classic cars and motorcycles to supplement my loss of income.
Due to budget cuts in the division I was working for; Park Authority there would be no full time jobs as was promised. So I applied in the Vehicle Services division and started out, again at the bottom. Initially as a tire service guy but at the last minute moved up a notch to a Technician 1. I was 55 then. Fast forward to today, I've been promoted several times, have an office now and an slated to ( hopefully) be up for next promotion in my department. I'll be 63 in Oct.

Personally I found that most companies do not want to pay older people in middle management what they are worth. They would rather pay less to someone younger. Then they watch them make $10,000 mistakes.
So I just started my own company.

I worked for a great company for a decade, and the owner decided to take "early retirement at age 92" and he sold the business. The new owner was great, but he got cancer and died on us. The bad news is he gave the business to his idiot son. The idiot son immediately raped our bank account, and would not let us upgrade any equipment. The business spiraled down and was shut down by the idiot son, and I was without out a job in 2017.
I was 63 at the time and one of my co-workers and I started from scratch, shelled out the cash to start a business, and after a short time we bought an Cessna 182T and more and better computers, and some insane expensive mapping software. I work from home, and my business partner works from home. We are not getting rich, but the airplane had enough equity paid into the loan we told our bank we wanted a fixed rate loan several months ago. They were no happy, as they make less money, but they knew other banks would do the deal, so they had to. To paraphrase Mel Brooks in his movie, history of the world, "Its good the be the boss" and work on my schedule. I am really happy that the idiot son killed that company and made me start my own company.

I guess this year at 48. I'll probably do it a few more times too. I've been w@h for a decade or so. In fact, I keep finding excuses to go into the office these days just to change the scenery.

I technically took a new position at the college June of last year - my salary went up, my title changed, but my actual job duties are 93% my old developer job. I just now have SSH access to fix the servers.
I'm not a job hopper though - aside from 2 jobs in high school, I've only had 2 employers - did almost 9 years at a hospital as a PT Aide and then courier and supply tech, and I've been at the college for 24 years now, first 20 in one position then moved over to the developer side. I'll be able to retire with full state benefits when I'm 57... or I can work AND collect retirement at the same time for up to 5 years, after which the retirement pay is paid out in lump sum. Plan on working 2 or 3 years thru DROP so when I get that fat check I can pay off house, restore 356, and buy a boat. Then I'll take a year or so off, and come back as an adjunct instructor. Maybe.

I used to average ~4 years. My shortest was 6 months (hated that job). I've now been at the company I work for now about 12 years, but I have changed jobs twice in that time. I think my first position was about 6 years, then 3, and still at the current.
I think covid changed a lot of things around jobs and working from home. I know years ago, I've heard of folks that had flexible arrangements (working from home) and ended up getting a second job. So they were pulling 2 checks, but probably not doing 80 hours of work. I suspect that'll end up happening and some of the current WFH stuff will get axed.

I just hit 3 years at my "new" part time gig being the business manager for a small private school. Great hours, nice people, great benefits, low pay. I turned 59 in April. I will retire from this job, except... an old work colleague from many years ago called a few days ago. He needs a CFO at a small company he became the CEO for. Many more hours, much more pay, small ownership interest that should pay out in 5 years. By no means a sure thing but I thought my corporate days were gone. The next few weeks could be interesting. Or not. I may have a hard time going back to a real job and/or he may be blowing smoke up my arse.

65. do i win anything?
retired at 59. a loud obnoxious neighbour forced me back to work - on the weekends - for sanity's sake. a few extra discretionary bucks in these inflationary times never hurt, either. 2x12hrs = 60% of a full time job. more or less. Last edited by creaturecat; 08-31-2022 at 08:23 AM.. |

Current job market, anyone can go back to work, any age. I have been a hiring manager and yes, hired a lot of "late career" people with great success. I don't plan on staying in one place just because of old age. That said, I hope to have my last full time job currently.

Retired from the Army at 52. Worked at GSA and DHS for a little over a year in DC and couldn't stand it. Left abruptly one day and started doing contract work.
China virus hit us in the pocket book and we relocated back to Texas where I hung a shingle and have loved every minute of it. Clients can be difficult sometimes but that far outweighs working for some SES or GS15 in DC that has been at whatever agency for a million years and has no idea what they are doing.

I did, 4 years ago at 46 years of age, but had no choice in the matter.
Had a very well-paying CIO role. I discovered corruption, stuck to my guns on King IV, blew the whistle on what I saw, and got a lot of very senior people fired. It saved a lot of pensioners from future hardship, but doomed my own career too I'm afraid. I went through an extremely stressful time, but then discovered how liberating it is to follow your passion which in my case is mechanical design and manufacture. Turns out I'm rather good at it too, as I now have a very cool patent for a mining safety device behind my name, together with quite a few innovative designs in the field of intrinsically safe rated equipment. I also get to churn out new ideas, often of my own choosing every day. It doesn't pay as well as the corporate world (yet), and my retirement savings took a real knock from which I may never recover, but I wish I had made this change a long time ago. I do still dabble in IT a bit, but limit it to independent consulting work only. It allows me to give professional advice that is right for the client, and not my employer's selfish need to push product and annuity income over everything else. I'm at the moment doing some cool projects with a local university, that includes IT project management as well as a fair bit of management mentorship. I'm happy to have an end-by date for my engagements though, as it allows me to move on to interesting stuff all the time, and not become jaded or a slave to corporate politics. Haven't been happier in my entire life.

I start a new job Monday at 54. We did not get along at the old job. Some got fired from there for calling them on their shenanigans and it was time to move on. I was there 12 years.

I'm curious what people are being paid for these jobs after retirement. I see people working at HD or a golf course for very little pay. I couldn't do it.
Are you making good money or just trying to keep busy?
