Annual Vehicle Property Tax

In the state of NC, we have the pleasure of paying property tax every year as part of our annual inspection/registration process. Last year, I paid $123.83 ($4,080 appraised value). This year, I'm hit with $502.10. ($32,100 appraised value). My tax just went up $400 (Annually) on a 33 year old car. WTF.

I'm not a fan of annual property tax on vehicles. I can stomach the $100. But $500 for a 33 year old vehicle is ridiculous ..... whatever the value. If I paid $500 for the 33 year life of the car I would have paid $16,500 of property tax. This is after paying the initial sales tax.

Do I question this or let it ride in case the state says it should have been higher all along?

Property tax on a car? I've never heard of that?

The only thing I pay the state of MI is $30 for a 10 year plate. I do that with two cars...next year three.
They have to be 25 years old or more.

I wonder does NC use real values. 911s have been going up in value for some time now, just wondering what changed. I also wonder if someone added an extra 0 at the end of the value be mistake. I don't think it would hurt to ask.

Washington does as well. We call it a "collector vehicle" registration. Vehicles are eligible at 30 years, so long as they are ostensibly only driven to shows, other "car" events, occasional pleasure driving, and for "testing and tuning". We cannot put them on a daily driver, in other words. It's a one time registration, good for the duration of our ownership.

About ten years ago Washington revamped its vehicle licensing valuation process. Through votor initiative, we won "$30 car tabs". Except, well, I pay close to $200 per year with all of their "add-ons", which are all patently illegal.

Before that, however, fees were assessed on vehicle value. Folks with higher end vehicles were commonly paying over $5,000 per year for tabs. This drove a lot of folks to register those in Idaho, Montana, and Oregon.

Then one day our State Patrol ran a "sting" operation at a National Park campground. They bounced license plates on expensive motor homes, fifth wheels, and the like off of the addresses and drivers' license numbers left on the little cards in the registration box. They wound up impounding several dozen RV's registered out of state by Washington residents and holding them for what turned out to be, in many cases, tens of thousands of dollars in back fees and fines. In the end, many, if not most, wound up forfeiting those RV's. It made a big, big splash around here, as I'm sure was the intent.

So, yeah, registering out of state doesn't always pan out.

Cashman, NC recently changed the antique auto regulation to 30 years old. You should go online a look up the procedure. It drops taxable value to $500. Some restrictions on use.

If you pay tax on it, you don't own it.

You rent, but are responsible for all repairs. If allowed.

The money is to keep it from being taken back.

We have it here in Va, personal property tax; vehicles, trailers, etc. If it has tags on it, you will be taxed yearly.

When I lived in NC (many decades ago) the general justifications was that the sales tax was very low so they had to have the property tax on vehicles. Here in TN we pay 9.75% sales tax on almost everything except food. What is it in NC?

Sales tax is 6.75 % where I live in NC.
Good news is the tax on car purchases is only 3%. Highway use tax.

Here in Washington, we do not have a state income tax. That appears to be the justification for an up to (county by county) 9% sales tax on everything but food, excessive license tab fees (which have been voted down by initiative at least twice, but persist nonetheless), among the highest gas taxes in the nation, and among the highest property taxes in the nation.

Oh, and yes, about that "sting" - want to see the government do something about "crime"? Commit that "crime" against them. You will never see them enforce with such zeal.

When I was looking for a job fresh out of school, I looked in various states. Oregon (where I was) had no sales tax, but 8% income tax (with an extra 1% for Multnomah County/Portland). As you pointed out, across the Columbia River in Vancouver, people had no state income tax, but sales tax of about 9%. States like TX and FL (also looked for jobs there), had no income tax, but high sales tax. Massachusetts had 5% sales tax and 5% income tax. Cross the border to NH with no sales tax, and you had high income tax. No matter where I looked, most states had about 10% of combined tax, income + sales.

But here in Kalifornia, we have about 9-13% state income tax, and almost 10% sales tax, too.

To the OP: the annual property tax for my 930 used to be about $110 for years and years. It went up to about $230 last year IIRC.

That's crazy. KY has a similar tax, but it goes to a flat rate if the vehicle is over 20 years old, period (no need to register as a classic). I'd ask someone what's up.

If it is subject property tax, you can usually get a tax write-off. My state charges a fee based on the weight of the vehicle. My 04 X5 was $500, 14 535i $425, 911/930 were about $300.

Post #9 p911dad. Register as antique auto. You are 4 years late. Both my 911's are registered as antique autos. Here in Johnston Co. they use Hagerty values to value classic cars. And they use the highest value. Looks like that's what they did to you. The government monster never has enough of your money.
