Have tried a couple and currently use this one.

It's stainless steel so easy to clean.

Uses a standard fish tank pump which is the only real wear item and can be sourced from a million places for $10.00.

Not like they die often but I had a fountain earlier that lost a plastic gear you can't get so the whole thing was trash.

Filters are cheap and a box of 12 should last a year depending on how many cats are using it.

I don't use the foam filter, it gets nasty and the charcoal filter is all you need.

It's quiet unless it runs low on water then you get some cavitation but I refill every morning and it's no issue.

My family are PETCO adoption volunteers.

We do socialization of cats.

No one wants to adopt a timid or aggressive cat that can't tolerate being handled especially by kids so we work on that.

Wow. Much respect.

The two were timid but we know the drill...slow, non-aggressive introduction. They are doing great. On week four.

Again, we were very impressed with the PETCO process. Well done to you family.

Everyone I know must be from Texas ... unless they have a dawg. I'll put the lid back down if I find it that way.... which is rare... and always has been. Mebbe we should have a poll?

I don't mind putting the lid down... I'm gonna wash my hands. I don't wanna touch that filthy lid to raise it and then touch my .... well, nevermind. Public lids & seats get the stand on one leg and use the shoe technique too.

I wash my hands twice when out in public.

It's never made sense to me that you'd touch what is likely the cleanest part of your body with the dirtiest.

The ferals are interesting.

One of ours was as close to full feral as you could get without having crossed that line.

For the first 5 years he'd see me 20 feet away and haul ass.

Last two years he finally figured out I'm not so bad and has become my cat.

The second I sit on the couch there he is crawling in my lap for pets.

He's in his usual spot sleeping right next to me as I type.

Back to lids.
How many of you have the soft closing lids?
We have nothing but in our house and when I go elsewhere I accidently slam the lid because I forget it is not soft closing. It's usually pretty loud too!

I love my slow close lids and seats. Just a light touch to get them over center, and gravity takes over and lowers them quietly. Than, at most motels with regular lids, I forget ans wham it goes.

Have one. In my daughters bathroom. She never really learned how to, or cared to, close the damn thing without slamming it.

Because that is the primary purpose for the interwebs to exist to begin with.

Non of the comments here refer to the old time toilets....the one in the back yard.

Our family had one until a couple years before I was born. I remember visiting neighbors or relatives that still had one....not fun.

Definitely close the lid when done.

1) People in Texas leave the lid up because the water in the bowl is about 95 degrees, and any minerals, chemicals, or leftover bodily stuff will turn a closed bowl into fuming mess quickly.

2) Cats like the fountains not because they have bad eyesight, but because flowing water tastes better, it get oxygenated and the chlorine has a chance to escape. Water in a dish is like water in a stagnate pond, no animal would voluntarily go there to drink if there was any flowing water around.

3) Those with fountains, the little pumps inside are simply magnetic impellers, no actual machinery inside. If they stop pumping, try taking the face plate off (4 tiny screws). Inside you'll find the impeller wheel with a magnet, and probably a tiny clump of fur or gunk or whatever which has blocked it up. Rinse it out, put it back together and I'll all but guarantee that it works again.

I've had lots of experience with outhouse type toilets at ranger stations I lived at - treating with lime, knocking the "peak" off, etc. After a while, they're not so bad. We've had slow close lids on all our toilets for many years & wouldn't choose any other. I recently bought one of those bidet seats with all the fancy things for my wife. I've never used it, but she totally loves it - heared seat and water, warm air for drying, some sort of anti-stink filter, a fancy blue light, etc., etc. She says it's the "best present ever."

Doing better than me. I had a foster cat to stay for the weekend, and the damn cat is still here five years later.
