Any auto industry folks know what’s really going on with supply?
First we heard it was computer chip supply and recently a dealer told me now it’s compressors (A/C I assume). I’ve searched online and just find main stream media articles that don’t actually tell us anything.
I’d love to replace my 9 year old cayman which doesn’t seem possible so I was thinking about a new pick up as a stop gap but that doesn’t even seem possible. So what’s the real deal and when is it going to be over?

If it was a GM dealer, he may have meant to say condensers. Those have been a problem for GM for a couple of years, but that problem arose because of failures.

And if you find something they add a market adjustment.
I found a 2022 Toyota Tundra SR5 yesterday. They said they didn’t mark it up but it did have dealer installed cat guard for $1800 and a tint, ceramic coat combo for $3500. Sure looks like mark up to me!

Makes me wonder how dealerships are surviving with little or no product to sell.

It’s still chips. It’s lack of supply of hundreds/thousands of other parts that make up the car. Then freight takes forever. Ford shipped an F150 for one of my customers over a month ago, it still hasn’t reached the dealer yet.

I don’t mind waiting to have something built, I just can’t even get an allocation to place an order.

I just put a deposit on a 2023 4Runner. Should be here in early October. If you are picky about options and colors it can take a bit of time. In my case I started looking about 6 weeks ago. Dealer said if we were in the market for a hybrid we’d be waiting for a year. We also went out of our way to avoid dealers doing mark ups or goofy options packages. I probably shopped every Toyota dealer from New Mexico to the Canadian border.
The biggest problem is that all of the cars are basically sold before they hit the lot. So you are buying site unseen and test driving a used version. Which in the case of 4Runners cost more than new.

I built a house recently for a couple and she worked at GM. She said the biggest problem was chips and the dozens and dozens of computers nowadays in cars that use them.

IMO, new cars will be the better deal. Used will take years to stabilize. Fewer new cars will lead to fewer...well, you know. |

And probably with less effort. Our sales guy did nothing other than call that there was a car coming from Japan that was not yet spoken for. He said if you are interested come down and pay the deposit. Otherwise it goes to the next person in line.

Let's see...Cindy's '16 Camry just turned 17,000 miles. 32,000 on my '09 Mustang. Worry not guys, we're not likely to be trying to join any lists of hopeful buyers.

My wife has been trying to custom order a new Mercedes SUV (tried to talk her into another Cayenne, but wants something bigger). We put a deposit down in Feb and to date do not even have an allocation yet. Supposed to be soon they say, but I’m not holding my breath.

I’ve been trying to get a Cayman GTS allocation for about 6 months but even as a previous customer I’ve had no luck.
I drove a new Tundra today. I liked it. It was a short drive but the ride seemed much better than my last truck, a 2008 Silverado. It only had 5 miles on it so I didn’t floor it but even 1/4 throttle felt pretty strong. I did some pretty fast turns and it felt planted well for a big truck. The Ram 1500 gets really good reviews so I’ll drive one too but it would have to be really good to overcome the quality deference. The salesman was better than the one I talked to Friday. He pulled up their delivery schedule and showed me what’s on the lot and on the truck plus what’s already spoken for. Probably the most transparent a salesman has been outside a porsche dealership. He said they have not been able to order a truck for 3 years and just get what Toyota sends them. Sounds like they get a Tundra every few days so maybe something thats close enough will come up before too long. He said they price them at MSRP but I’m pretty sure all get window tint and ceramic coating add on. There was a Tundra TRD Pro out front and he said they only get one a month so they get a $20k premium over the $71k sticker.
