Eye Exam Questions

So, I have to have an eye exam and was hoping someone could provide me with the answers for the chart on the wall. j/k

I ackshully had an exam today and my prescription says that both eyes are the same and the prescription was written with identical numbers. I attempted to enter those numbers into an online eyeglass website.

A pop-up asked me if I were sure both eyes had the same numbers as most are different for left and right eye. I was sure about the numbers but now i am not sure that they are correct.

Doc is gone for the day, Reddit Optomology page took down my post so I am here asking the Pelican Optometrists or generally brilliant people for their opinion.

After my cancer surgery on the right side of my face and the following radiation I went to see if I needed new glasses as I was having some trouble focusing and close distances. So, I went to the company called Stanton Optical since they were running these commercials where eye exam was "free" and two pairs of glasses for $99. The young lady that checked my yes said yes, your prescription is too old and she could see cataracts which I figured I had since I see black "floaters and dots" so she referred me to an eye surgeon which this way Medicare will now cover the cost of any eye related stuff. So far I have been seeing the same doctor for several years and they do about an hour of testing with dye, dialation, ETC so far, they are staying the same size. They show me the picture of my eye internals each time and the cataracts are staying the same size. He said if they start getting larger then laser surgery will be needed.

How did the test go?

Did you feel that when you said "1 or 2 " was corresponding with the correct response (less fuzzy)?

There are several things I would never buy online: eyeglasses, condoms, viagra, used Porsches and did I mention eyeglasses. As the store manager explained to me besides the test to get your perscription(s), they also have to adjust the glasses so the focal point for the lens is aligned right to the focal point of your eye. A good examiner will also check your eyes for cataracts and refer you to an opthamologist if needed.

Um, when you look at a sign or lettering at 30 feet away, does it look the same (equally blurry) with both eyes? Valuable clue right there.

Cataracts don't cause you to see floaters and dots. Instead what you get is filmy/foggy/blurry vision that often has a yellow tint to it.

Floaters and dots are "normal" but if you notice they get worse over the course of a year or less - then go get checked out by a specialist. Floaters are calcified proteins that live in your vitreous. If they get bad - then can start pulling on your retina and detach it, requiring much more extensive surgery.

Right they are totally normal 99% of the time. I've always had perfect vision (until my mid 40s when I started needing readers) and I've had floaters for many, many years. They are most noticeable when your pupils are very small like looking up at a bright sky. I was recently checked out and have no issues with my eyes, but I definitely have floaters.

So...
OD: +2.25 / -0.75 X 95 OS: +2.25 / -0.75 X 90? Is there an ADD as well or are these just readers for near vision?

I don't think there was an ADD, these are for progressive lens with near and far deficiencies.

Unfortunately I don't have the script in front of me but am confident those numbers are correct.

If the Rx is for progressive lenses you would need both a distance RX and a near RX so an add would be required. Are the numbers your distance RX do you recall? Do you currently wear corrective lenses for distance...driving, watching TV?

Yes, I currently have progressive lenses for near and far. Thanks for the help, it looks like I have an incomplete set of data.

To answer your initial question it is not unusual to have both eye's Rx to be the same or at least close to each other in terms of refractive error. As with all other aspects of our physiology symmetry is the norm. So congratulations on being so.....symmetrical! One other thing for you to brag about....lol!

I spoke to the doc, the ADD numbers are both +2.25. She is confident, while she wouldn't talk to me directly, that the numbers are correct and the exam is good.

I dunno, sure seemed like when we were going thru the exam that there were differences between the two eyes.

Think I will get another exam for peace of mind.

I got a 2nd exam done today. The prescription changed from the first exam.

First exam OD +2.25 -.75 090 +2.25
OS +2.25 -.75 095 +2.25

Second exam OD+175 -.75 082 +2.50
OS+2.25 -1.00 100 +2.50

Money well spent.
