Had to shoot a cat this morning

Had to shoot a cat this morning. I hated it, but I didn't see an alternative.

Out here in the country we get stray cats all the time. We appreciate them because they keep the area clear of mice and rats. They eventually become friendly and we take them in and get then spayed/neutered and immunized. Right now there are 6.
But this guy has never become friendly and started attacking the other cats. We were afraid he might have rabies or some other disease that he would give to our cats.
The attacks had become more frequent and after the second one this morning I had had enough. 16 ga. bird shot from 15 feet makes quite a mess of a cat. At least he went quickly.

If that cat acted rabid and was attacking the others, you might want to get it tested.

Be careful with that. Out here in California if it tested positive they will euthanize any of your other pets that may have came in contact with it. I found a dead bat once and tried to do the right thing by calling animal control to have it tested and the first thing they tried to do was take all of our pets. Fortunately the bat tested negative.

The worst part is that in order to obtain an accurate test result, the animal must be killed to secure a brain sample, so they would basically put down all of your pets take a brain sample and then say "oops sorry" you pet didn't test positive after all.

yada ...yada..
needed killings is a under used term..
whether it be applied to rabid cat..
or some one beating an old person..
or plain ..
should have expired long ago..
do it..
get it done..

true moral compass will care
the ones that chime up..

Could have put some sport in it and used a bow and arrow but otherwise I have no truck with this.

Trust me, I get it, Patrick. You did the right thing: Never pleasant, always a mess.

I've had to shoot a number of animals over the years, some rabid, some just annoying to the extreme.

I always carry in the Ranger...the hardest one for me was a rabid Fox, clearly under duress. I even called the Wildlife Management guy who lives near me: After I described what I was seeing, "kill it now" was all he said.

The problem is that different folks have very different, sometimes extreme (strict or lax) thresholds of what "needs killin'" means.

^^^^ This. An obviously rabid critter.... bang. The grey foxes that were behind my house (even seen during daylight hours) for a few months recently were just a mama raising her young... determined after several sitings.... they've moved on. No harm, no bang .

Probably should, maybe I'll call animal control and see if they're interested. They might like to know if there is rabies in the area.
All of the cats and dogs that hang out around here have been immunized against rabies and distemper, so I think they're OK. From our perspective it's the thousands of other diseases he might have carried we were worried about.

Patrick - you did the right thing and I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision for you, as it wouldn't be for me. But respect to you for taking care of what was needed....

I hate cats. Never been attacked but there’s a stray that keeps pooping in my yard. Don’t know what to do about it. If it starts attacking my dog though, it’ll be the last thing that cat does.

One of the hardest parts of country living, Patrick, at least for an empathetic man. Just one of those things, though. It's a very good sign that you feel bad about it, though... too many seem to rather enjoy it... You're a good man, and the rest of the cats are better off for having you around.

Da f*k you talking about?

No one uses no truck as an expression. I have heard it used once in my life aside from this.

Note to self: Only notify speeder if I kill a stinker cat with a bow and arrow. Otherwise he will give me the get off my lawn business.

I’ve been waiting all my life to use that expression and today was the special day! 👍
